So i got cs2 yesterday and I wanted to render something. I saw this pic.

Now i'm kinda stuck. I've gotten to this point.
http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p87/IamCaleum/render2.jpg
Because some of the background was so light i went back and paintbrushed most of the erased area black (might have been a bad idea).

Now around her head and her body getting nice clean crisp cut off from pic to background is pretty easy but what can i do about these strands of hair?

Note: i still have to go back to the 1 and 3 pixel brush to close up around the hair somemore.

I would just use the pen tool to render that picture tbh as it's a pretty simple picture to render. Could do it pretty much perfectly in about 10 minutes.

I'll have to play with that more. Its one of those tools thats still "WTF?!" to me right now. I was using this tutorial for rendering.

Just seemed like alot of damn work.

Use the pen tools and lassos to grab chunks of what you are going to erase and hit delete.
Just use the eraser for the fine, little detailed stuff.

Using duplicate layers during progress will help; and don't paintbrush things black!! You'll just have to erase it again.
Make a solid color layer under the picture that you are rendering; that way when you delete and erase things from the main layer, you'll be able to see the solid color of the underlayer which will help to see what you have and have not rendered.

When you're finished, turn off the solid layer [hit the eye thing.] and you should probably see a blank/checkered background. Save your pic as a .png

The pen and lasso tools will definitely be your friend when rendering, just get used to using them and you'll see that this pic is easy to render. The magic wand can also help when rendering but don't rely on it b/c sometimes it will select stuff you want to keep in the pic. Also forget about that tutorial since that guys rendering job leaves something to be desired.

The masking tool also works, there's alot of rendering guides on the internet so try to google for it :)
Good luck anyway, there's lots of ways to do it so try em out and find out which works best for you.

I'm gonna have to look around for some more. I'm having all kinds of trouble with this damn pen tool lol, but i really want to get rendering down pat before messing with sigs.

I use the polgonal selection tool It does the job very well.
example:

I think its simple compared to the pen tool.

Agreed, except for when you click too many times and have to start over. I hate that, but to me it's just quicker to do that or mask it.

meh if you click too many times, just hold shift and keep going from where you left off. You might need to cut out some bits it selected when you clicked too many times but its much quicker than starteing again.

Trouble? with the pen tool? it's quite easy rly..

You just gotta zoom quite a lot .. I usually zoom in 500-900% sometimes more.. Then follow the edge of your render with the anchor points.. :]

Oh and be sure to select paths instead of shape layers that's usually selected by default..

Thanks VK, did not know that. I shall put it to the test later tonight when I'm procrastinating.

In CS3 they made the pen tool more like the Illustrator Pen tool which is teh shit!!!

I usually cut out renders with pen tool or masking mode and a lot of patience

Look at the fan club banners in my signature spoiler (or the sig). All of those were cut using one of those two methods

I love your sigs/banners. I was going to ask you about your brushes, but I forgot.
