Share any of your favorite Black/Death/thrash/grind Metal bands here.
Suffocation FTW.
I usually can't listen to that much Death Metal. I'll listen to Children of Bodom's remake of The Final Countdown, but that's it.
As for Thrash Metal, Metallica FTW.

Bodom used to be really good IMO, but their new sound just doesn't cut it any more.
As for Metallica, let us take a moment to remember Cliff Burton.
I don't listen to that much of Bodom, just that one song.

Yeah, definetly. At least he had the coolest death of any Rock Star in history. Crushed by the Tour Bus. . . twice!

Eh, I've loved Bodom up until recently. the new stuff on their myspace sucks ass.
And totally, no lame drug overdoeses or plane crash! He pretty much set the bar for rock star deaths with that one.
My friend listens to some band named Job For A Cowbow. I just laugh at the guy's voice.
I listen to a lot of DragonForce. They call themselves Extreme Power Rock/Metal. Though everybody calls them Nintendo Metal XD

Dude, I fucking hate Job For A Cowboy. My girlfriend loves them, all I hear is mindless strumming and shitty "bree bree bree" vocals.
Fuck Deathcore, it's NOT METAL!!!!!
Eh, I'm not too big on Dragonforce anymore. The Keyboards kinda killed it after a while :/
what else do ya like?
Well, apart from DragonForce, the only Heavy Metal band I really listen to is Metallica. Well, they're older stuff. The Black Album and earlier is all awesome. The newer stuff like Load, Reload, and Garage Inc sucks. Can't wait for the new album though. They're supposed to be going back to the old Thrash sounding music.

Ok first off, doesnt matter if you like JFAC or not, you have no choice but to respect the drummers skill, can you gravity blast? I agree about the singer, i do like the music but hes vocals arent that good,
as for bands i like
pretty much any UKDM as long as they have skill, massivley into cephalic carnage technical deaths a lot more interesting than normal stuff,
anyone into any slam metal, prophecy, skinless etc?

My favourite extreme metal bands? Well, I don't know if you'd classify it as extreme metal but I've got tons of Swedish Death/Gothenburg stuff on my playlist...stuff like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates, Carcass, Soilwork, Amon Amarth, Dimension Zero, Avatar, Arch Enemy.
Then there's of course the finnish part Children Of Bodom (I actually love the new songs I've heard of them - especially blooddrunk), Norther, Kalmah, Ensiferum, Insomnium, Wintersun...
But personally I wouldn't really call them "extreme"...sure they have, their harsh vocals/growls but they've that melodic edge ^^ (Still I love them all)
Bands I consider to be extreme and like are for example Behemoth, Vader, Watain, Opeth, Immortal, The Project Hate, Marduk, Emperor, Gorgoroth, Dark Funeral :D.
I'm not much of a thrash listener, but old Metallica, old Sepultura, Sodom, Kreator and Slayer are pretty awesome.
Someone mentioned Dragonforce...god I hate them. Their songs just consist of guitar wankery, boring shredding and gay vocals :P.
And, Children Of Bodom are NOT death metal :p

So you like swedish black metal? Nice, Watain & Dark Funeral are up there on my list.
The most extreme bands I listen to would be stuff like Hate Eternal, Vital Remains, Skinless, Deeds of Flesh, stuff like that.
Also, Bodom is (or was) Melodic BLack. I guess now they'd be more blackened thrash metal.

I guess I do. I like most Black Metal as long as the bands aren't trying to be ultra kvlt and the production sounds like it's been recorde deep in the frostbitten forests of the north :push:
The most extreme bands I listen to would be stuff like Hate Eternal, Vital Remains, Skinless, Deeds of Flesh, stuff like that.
For me it'd be early Kataklysm, Torsofuck (although I do not listen to them frequently, and even if just a few selected songs) and the 1349 stuff I got.
I've given up on labeling CoB with some genre since they blend so many genres into one. I just call them metal :P

Well if you wanna be all like "wah wah wah JFAC are shit cause scene kids like them" then yes there shit but if you wanna start comparing shit and just insulting the whole band cause of the wank singer then your being immature, and if your gonna start comparing dont pull out fucking vital remains, cause all i have to say is Flo mounier, i dont even have to say cryptopsy but i will just for those who dont know who i mean, but he blasts the shit out of any death metal band on the planet,
and glad to see you like them at least + vital remains but VR are better with Glen on vocals.
Not so much on the black metal, i do like some of the music, but most of the bands take themselves to seriously, do love Dimmu though and i like immortal oh and theokatony not sure if you will have heard of them though.

I never liked JFAC, even before all the scene kids were all over their nuts. The drumming is sloppy, I never was one for constant breakdowns either. I can't stand the whole deathcore genre in general.
Cryptopsy is good, But wanna know who does even better blasting? Tomás Corn from Lykathea Aflame, My all time favorite death metal band. Now THAT, my frined, is the definition of insane drumming.
I haven't heard of THeokatony, but I'll check them out. I like other black metal acts like taake, thornspawn, & shit like that.
Someone mentioned Dragonforce...god I hate them. Their songs just consist of guitar wankery, boring shredding and gay vocals :P
I agree that their lyrics are incredibly corny. They are a band based off a video game though, it makes sense that their lyrics would sound like video game dialougue. Defeat, destiny, spirit, soul, etc.
I love the instrumentation though. It's hard to find a band that still continues with awesome guitar solos and lyrics you can actually understand, even if they are corny. I listen to a lot more Power Rock or Hair Metal than Heavy Metal though.
Oh, of course, I forgot Dimmu Borgir. Although I wouldn't call them black either :<

Obviously, go listen to Blood Mountain, all shall be revealed.
I'm listening to them now, and I'm not impressed. I've only heard two songs though. I can't find Blood Mountain. Iron Tusk was horrible. And they've completely butchered Metallica's Orion. I think it's that they seem very SlipKnot-ish and I hate that type of sound though.

The only extreme band I ever really got into was In Flames.
Their concert had my ears ringing for a night.
I've only recognized two of these artists. Metallica and Dragonforce.
Metallica's new stuff, is okay. And Dragonforce is still good. But it is getting old. And I'm adding Mudvayne and Breaking Benjamen to the list
I'm pretty sure Breaking Benjamin isn't Heavy Metal. But I haven't heard anything by them, so I could be wrong.
I don't like any of Metallica's new stuff. It sucks and keeps getting worse. Hopefully the new album will be awesome like their old stuff.
I haven't heard much of anything from them but Breaking Benjamin sure as hell isn't metal at all, let alone extreme metal.
As for what extreme metal bands I like, its been a while since I've listened to much of the more extreme genres and have been leaning more towards the more traditional bands, but I used to listen to a good bit of Cannibal Corpse and Cradle of Filth (though CoF really only had a few good albums).
I also liked Stormlord (a fairly obscure Italian band that describes itself as "Extreme Epic Metal", though their current lyrics are pretty much Black Metal screaming). And my favourite extreme metal band would be GWAR, though only their past 3 albums have been thrash metal.

Yeah, LoG are awesome live aswell, although their stuff tends to get somewhat monotone on CD.

You have no idea, when i was working with a mates band cause they wanted my vocals on one of their tracks the rhythm guitarist would constantly just play lamb of god in between songs, it got really fucking boring

Both i was in a southern metal band but finding people who are into it and play it was difficult even though i knew loadsa people who liked it so ive started up a technical metal band with a mate so thats a lot heavier vocals

Megadeth > Metallica.
:)
I agree. Metallica hasn't released a good album for like 19 yeards (the black album doesn't count as it was imo only mediocre) and Megadeth's still releasing quality albums. Also, imo, Megadeth's guitarwork blows Metallica's out of the water.
I'm not saying metallica are bad, their first four albums ruled, but I hate it how bands like Megadeth get completely neglected in comparison, especially since Metallica without Mustaine wouldn't have gone anywhere.

Metallica is serious win.
IMO, Mustaine and Burton drove metallica's sound and popularized it, ever since mustaine got the boot and burtun hit the road, hetfield and ulrich were able to make one last great album and that was justice, which the sound was more relevant to the "thrash" genre. Black album was less thrashier than the others but still great, after that they have been watering down there material into what we call st.shit. all artists will always get stuck in one genre, and feel the need to upgrade their sound because they get bored of the same sound. For what skill and talent metallica had, they failed trying to reshape their sound.
Megadeth on the other hand had only one sorta failure album and that was risk. Risk had a few nice tracks but the rest was garbage. CRUSH EM'! They moved away from the Trash genre but still put out great albums. Sucks when you get titled into one genre and you try to expand your sound and instantly your a sell out.
Mustaine is one of the greatest, if not best metal guitarists today.
The guy can still shred like a mother fucker, he gets better with age.

That's one thing I really dislike about the scene...people want bands to make the same album over and over again. If a band changes their sound into a slightly "softer" direction, it'll be called mallcore, nu-metal, metalcore or whatever.
Mustaine is one of the greatest, if not best metal guitarists today.

QFT.
Also, Kirk Hammet is imo terribly overrated while Hetfield completely underrated. Hammet's solo's are basically just a bunch of trills, while Hetfield plays all his riffs with ONLY downstrokes, which is pretty insane.
As I've said before, DragonForce fail. They might be a moderately instersting band if they weren't messing around with their 4 minutes solos and would't just constantly sweep at 200bpm just for the sake of the speed with the named annoying-as-fuck nintendo sounds. Their songwriting is pretty crappy aswell.
Yeah...R.I.P Chuck Schuldiner....

Dont lie, arch enemy dont count, there not metal, there a sick guitarist with some other wankers on stage, there only famous because there was an add in the paper saying wanted female vocalist to prove the masses wrong about women in metal, did it work? no, and now were left with an amazing guitarist Michael Amott in a shit band, thank christ for the reformation of carcass
Charliehsv

Arch Enemy not metal? LMFAO. And Fyi, Arch Enemy were famous even before they got Angela as a vocalist and she blows the old vocalist out of the water (and lots of other vocalists aswell).
There wank, and ive heard the old vocalist, not that impressive either, point is michael amott is the only good member of that group, there fucking wank live as well ive seen them twice and i spent the entire time stood talking with a mate drinking beer and shouting abuse at angela between songs

So because you dislike them they're not metal?
Both times I've seen them, they were the best band playing that evening. Saying all the mebers except Michael are bad is just stupid, since Christian Amott is nearly as good at playing the guitar, and Daniel Erlandsson is a good drummer (who plays in Carcass aswell, in case you didn't know). You might not like the music, but calling them bad musicians is just waaay off.
It was sarcasm, there are bad metal bands as well, arch enemy being a pretty fucking bad one, and alright maybe the rest of the band arnt that terrible but michael is the only one who makes it remotley interesting for me, as for angela i have a friend who can scream better shes never played to more than like 500 people and when i say that i actually mean it because if you asked angela about nargyl she would tell you that she hates the singer she wouldnt tell you the reason why is that there singers better than her though

I'm not sure what sub-genre Bodom are, but I like their music a lot. Lamb of God are one of my favorite bands... I have many metal bands on my list, but a few don't belong on the "extreme" list. But, three that do belong here are Gojira, Amon Amarth and Hypocrisy.

Do define bodoms genre is hard....they're a mix of various different genres. It doesn't really matter to me though, since they're one of my favourite bands.
Amon Amarth rule...they're a kind of band that just keeps getting better and better. With Oden At our Side was imo one of 2006's best realeases. Hypocrisy are great too...Peter Tägtgren is a god...and although not extreme, his work with Pain is awesome aswell.
Another band which hasn't bee named yet is Dark Tranquillity! Definately one (if not the best) melodic death metal bands around and a pioneer of the genre. Their latest release Fiction is also imo the best album of 2007.
Nah bodom are power thrash, thats my opinion at least, theres a genre for everything my personal favourite
mathcore, technical mad shit, plus my mates going out with the guitarist from sikth and her and him have been helping me write technical death,
fun with timings

UA was good, but definately not one of 2007's best. My personal contenders to that title would either be Watains "Sworn to the Dark", Machine Heads "The Blackening", Dark Tranquillity's "Fiction" or "Rise Of The Tyrant" from Arch Enemy.
I wont start again with arch enemy but
machine head? im sorry no, im a dedicated fucking head fan ive seen em live sang every word to the song pitted with huge crowds to get near the front and one of my next tattoos is the MH logo from burn my eyes, but the blackening only has like 2 machine head standard tracks, it was a massive let down except halo and aesthetics of hate, aesthetics mainly because of the fact that it insults grimm who insulted dime which is unfuckingacceptable, but best of 2007? no way i could list you 10 metal albums better easily.
agree with dark tranquilty there not my style usually but there definatly good at what they do.

Some of my picks for 07' would have to be:
Throwdown - Venom and Tears
Devildriver - The Last Kind Words
Down - Over the Under (not as hard but Anselmo still kicks ass)
Zombie - Live (actually sounds 10 times better than his studio releases)
*I'm sure there are more but they seem to be slipping my mind currently.
Charliehsv

I liked The Blackening...yes it's not typical for Machine Head but that doesn't make it bad. The only song I didn't really like was Now I Lay Thee down. Other albums worth a mention are Schlacht - Avatar, In Sorte Diaboli - Dimmu Borgir and Sworn To A Great Divide - Soilwork. Other than that there've been pretty few good new releases.

Extreme Metal is AWESOME! I listen to almost all Metal genres but my favorite are Death and Black Metal... My favorite bands include:
- Cannibal Corpse
- Dimmu Borgir
- Children of Bodom
- Slayer
- Satyricon
- Amon Amarth
- Ensiferum
- Behemoth
- Naglfar
- Nile
- Wintersun
- Bolt Thrower
- Kataklysm
- Impaled Nazarene
- Trivium
- Darkthrone
- Death
- list goes on...
and guys, here's my comment on the Children of Bodom's genre issue ;): First it was Meloblack, then it was Melodeath. Now it is Extreme Power Metal :ninja:
Never call CoB Death Metal.

Lots of awesome bands on that list there... <3 Ensiferum and Wintersun!
Listened to the whole Blooddrunk album once now, and it's pretty awesome. There aren't any filler songs at all, and the worst songs are still very good. It's definately better than Are You Dead Yet? (which I still liked), but I'm still missing some of their neoclassical old sound.

what's this? Third track and I'm still waiting for a great, speedy guitar intro (like in Kissing The Shadows)! I'm disappointed if there's none of those cool and catchy intros...
Anyway, LoBodomy has a nice guitar solo ^^
Down - Over the under (down never ever lose their touch)
As I lay dying - An ocean between us
Sarpanitum - Despoilment of origin
Atreyu - Lead sails paper anchor (i usually hate them but this album was good)
Strain - Strain
Orange goblin - healing through fire
Parkway drive - horizons (a lot heavier than there usual hardcore stuff)
Crepitation/Kastrated/Ingested - Northwest slam fest
Protest the hero - Fortress
Cephalic carnage - xenosapien
theres the better 10 albums.
Charliehsv
02-25-2008, 06:07 AM
lol....as i lay crying and atreyu ><
After having listened to Blooddrunk quite a few times now I can say that I really like this album. The sound is alot more thrashy while still having extremely catchy melodies. There's alot of double bas drums, which is of course always a huge plus, and as I've said before the guitarwork is awesome. There are also pretty many riffs which are quite untypical for CoB ,like the mainriff of blooddrunk which has alot of LoG vibes, or the main riff of One Day You Will Cry which imo as a neothrash Machine Head feel to it with the pinch harmonics. All in all you can really hear that they've been influenced by touring with Slayer and Lamb Of God for the better part of a year.
cept that As I lay dyings new album is pro, regardles of past failure and same with atreyu, sounds like 80s stuff.
Charliehsv
02-25-2008, 04:27 PM
As I Lay Dying is imo a mediocre metalcore band at best, while atreyu are just a bunch of fags. But each to his own :D

It was like a cheap imitation of In Flames x_x
Charliehsv
02-26-2008, 02:26 PM
Yeah, I saw Engel during the same tour. They were decent live, although they only got like 2-3 songs I like. And them sounding like In Flames is no surprise, since their Guitarrist Niclas Engelin has filled in for either Björn or Jesper from In Flames during their tours. Also Engel's album was recorded at In Flames studios xD

They're easily one of my favorite bands.

Yup, Nergal is a great guitarrist. The only thing i dislike about Behemoth is that sometimes the vocals are too layered and effected for my taste.
Mettalica, invented, thrash.......
yes.....clearly...can i point out that a majority of people, maybe not people you know but certainly people i know would call metallica heavy metal not thrash not that they had nothing to do with thrash, its just in my opinion the rise of thrash came from slayer, metallica may have been and are bigger but i dont really think they created thrash, in fact scrap that none of them did because they all took influences of earlier bands

listen to their first album from 83
that started the thrash movement, and megadeth helped too since dave mustaine wrote half the songs on kill em all.
slayer started in the same year
4 bands created thrash: Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax

Many of the bands started smae time as metallica, as well.

but was their original thrash or more glam oriented?
Exodus as well, besides you cant cite metallica who are now massive sell outs and slayer and metallica released there first real albums at the same time, kill em all has initially only a small release and theres only something like 2000 copies made, the first album that made metallica who they are in my opinion is ride the lightning WHICH came out the same year as Haunting the chapel and fistful of metal, but to be honest we could argue about who the fore fathers are for ever because Sabbath were the first real metal band and they took their influences from hendrix and etc etc and it basically goes on like that for ever back to the time of the slave trade because black people created blues and soul and such which influenced all the way up to jimmi hendrix who influenced others and so on and so forth until metal was born,
Oh and for anyone interested Cynic are releasing a new album this year

fast tempo? check. speedy, agressive guitar riffs? check. (at least on their first album)
You could say they are Speed Metal or sometimes even regular Heavy Metal, but overall they're a Thrash metal band ;)
enough with this genre-fucking anyway xD. Talk about Slayer, I think their "God Hates Us All" album is the best
Charliehsv
03-05-2008, 10:01 AM
Lol, imo God Hates Us All is a shitfest. If I'm forced to pick a favourite Slayer album it would either be South Of Heaven, Seasons In The Abyss or Reign In Blood. Probably Seasons In The Abyss though :P

Aint better at all, no offence like but i dont know one real slayer fan who would say that and ive got friends with the eagle and sword pentagram tattooed on them,
and in all fairness metallica are different if you compare them to alot of thrash bands

Has anyone mentioned Mudvayne? Most people consider them Death Metal, but they're slated as Nu Metal; I myself prefer not to categorize them.
Their music is actually quite good.
Very hard songs:
- Dig
- Solve Et Coagula
- Cradle
- Prod
- -1
- Silenced
- Everything and Nothing
- Dull Boy
- IMN
- Pushing Through
- Determined
- Tv. Radio.
- Just
Lightest Songs:
- World So Cold
- Not Falling
- Fall Into Sleep
- King of Pain(a cover for the Police, and it's actually REALLY good)
Intermediate: (?)
- Death Blooms
- Crawling
- Choices
- All That You Are
- Happy?

Probably because Mudvayne ISN'T death metal. Hell, they don't even fall under Extreme.
Want death metal? Listen to Disgorge, Impaled, Severed Savior, Internal Suffering, Dying Fetus, Ect.

Right now, I wouldn't doubt that... His voice has changed alot, and he doesn't quite have control over it for the time being.
However, all of the stuff from the L.D. 50 album has really sweet vocals that flow with the type of song. They put on one hell of a show live, or they used to anyway.
The bass player is my favorite bassist in the past like, 20 years. Slap bass in metal? what? lol
There are easily better metal bassists but hes is pretty good, and i hate him because hes part of hell yeah, the singer i mean, its the biggest sell out band ever
Wolfs Reign

I think they're more of a supergroup then a sell out band, I mean, who wouldn't buy an album that had metals finest in it?
Someone who has taste, fuck nothingface there shit anyways, the singer as i said, well the majority of bands singers are better, and vinnie paul is the fucking sell out who used his brothers death as a handle back on the fucking ladder, i mean its a fucking disgrace, dimes wife has been doing interviews since his death and getting free shit just cause she was dimes wife, she doesnt fucking do anything, and these are the mother fuckers who banned phil anselmo, who was like a fucking brother to dime before the arguments and break up of pantera, from dimes fucking funeral, even after he made a video publically apologising about what he had said and he fucking broke down on it and vinnie paul is the scum who wouldnt let one of his brothers good friends despite there differences near his funeral so anything vinnie paul does besides the stuff he did with damage plan and pantera disgusts me

You dont like pantera because of fans? im fucking dedicated i admit that i have a pantera tattoo that says rip dime and a cfh tattoo but thats not the point, at the end of the day what vinnie did was bullshit and if you want to deny that fine but dont fucking insult me, i listen to every kind of music, so dont fucking think i dont know what im talking about

They have a few good songs, but alot of the stupid fans who are all over anything Dimebag related kinda kill it for me.
Phil Anselmo is the shit though, Superjoint Ritual FTW.
I dont just love them cause of dime, in all fairness i actually personally know guitarists who were probably better but dime had a pretty revolutionary style, main reason is cause of phil though.

So is it like a retake back to Clayman? (dling in progress)
Charliehsv
03-16-2008, 08:58 AM
Hm, I wouldn't really say that. I mean, the album is really different to Clayman, but you definately hear some of their older influences in there (like acoustic bridges, those uber-melodic lead guitars). But the guitar tone is completely different (sounds like it's tuned down to A# to me) and the vocals are completely different aswell.
And yes, there is the song "The Chosen Pessimist" which is just fucking weird by In Flames standarts. Sounds like Anders's sideproject Passenger, which is some kind of alternative metal/rock mix band.
Wolfs Reign
