I read somewhere that the creature that is inside of the Count is based off a japanese myth. It's just a combination of stories. If you watch the actual anime it takes place on the moon, in Paris, and on a foreign planet. It's a futuristic take on the novel and a lot of things are different, like Haydee being an alien princess.
