I love November Rain by Guns N Roses, Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton, and Nights in White Satin by Moody Blues, Still Loving You by Scorpions, Beth by Kiss, Alone by Heart, Desperado by the Eagles, and Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin, and the list can just go on and on................ Those songs have so much meaning. And they always will. And some of the sadest are Eric Claptons's Tears in Heaven, written because of his son dying, and Desperado written for one of the Eagles' brother....pretty sad songs they are.......

I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight is not by Journey. It's by a band called Cutting Crew.
I don't know about saddest song. Goodbye To Romance is pretty sad I guess, along with Behind Blue Eyes like somebody else posted, but I haven't heard any songs that were really sad.

Yes, Eric Clapton's Tears in Heaven makes me cry every single time i hear it. And King of Hearts, you truly do know your music. And there are so many more of these songs as well. I just haven't had time to write them all down and post them. I kinda only had a few hours sleep in last few days. But, I will add alot more of these truly wonderful songs on here. This is a great thread, and i love hearing about these songs. Brings back soo many memories. Oh, i just realized one, k, now this is usually a christmas song, called 'Christmas Shoes for Mama', and I believe from Kenny Chesney. I know it's not a rock ballad, but this is truly one sad song.
Also, Simon and Garfunke's 'Sound of Silence or Scarborough Fair', and Pearl Jam's Jeremy or Black, U2's 'with or without you', Elton Johns 'Candle in the Wiind', Guns N Roses 'Patience', Meatloafs 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light', Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks 'Stop Tearing my Heart Around'.

But, out of the all-time greatest guitar players out of all the era's, from the 60's on up, I'd have to say that Jimmi Hendrix takes it hands down. I mean, that man could do absolutely amazing things with his guitar, truly amazing. But, he is not here, and Eric Clapton and Slash are, and Clapton's my fav, but Slash is also amazing as well. I guess, I just love 'em both.

I would have to say "hiro no tsuki" by akino arai is incredibly sad. it was one of the endings to outlaw star. american/british music wise "letter to elise" and "just like heaven" by the cure. the following songs sound happy, but if you listen to the lyrics you'll get how depressing they really are: "the only honest lovesong" by boys night out(note:get the fifty million people can't be wrong version if you don't like screaming) "shooting stars" by ozma, and "bleeder" and "queen of pain" by alkaline trio. like i said the ones i mentioned after the cure have a poppy feel to them, but the lyrics really get you especially if you can relate to them.

In Loving Memory - Alter Bridge
Thanks for all you've done
I've missed you for so long
I can't believe you're gone
You still live in me
I feel you in the wind
You guide me constantly
I've never knew what it was to be alone, no
Cause you were always there for me
You were always there waiting
And ill come home and I miss your face so
Smiling down on me
I close my eyes to see
And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me
I carry the things that remind me of you
In loving memory of
The one that was so true
Your were as kind as you could be
And even though you're gone
You still mean the world to me
I've never knew what it was to be alone, no
Cause you were always there for me
You were always there waiting
But now I come home and it's not the same, no
It feels empty and alone
I can't believe you're gone
And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me
I'm glad he set you free from sorrow
I'll still love you more tomorrow
And you will be here with me still
And what you did you did with feeling
And You always found the meaning
And you always will
And you always will
And you always will
Ooo's
And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me

Under the Bridge by Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Roadside
and
The Approaching Curb by Rise Against
The Approaching Curb is really sad because the singer doesn't sing the verses, he just says it, like reading a poem... it makes you feel like you can picture the situation (a break up... in a car). That song just about made me cry especially once I sat down and actually listened to what he says.
Pints of Guinness Make You Strong - Against Me!
Broken Hearts Club by Silent Drive
It's Been Awhile by Staind - beautiful fucking song... and its kinda sad, not exactly the saddest tho...

You Never Know - Immortal Technique
She was on her way to becoming a college graduate
Wouldn't even stop to talk to the average kid
The type of Latina I'd sit and contemplate marriage with
Fuck the horse and carriage shit, her love was never for hire
Disciplined, intellectual beauty's what I desire
Flyer than Salma Hayek or Jennifer Lopez
Everyone told me, kickin' it to her was hopeless
At first I just thought, she didn't mess with broke kids
The thug niggaz always talking about, how they smoke kids
But the rich-sniff-coke kids got no play
"I'm not even interested" is what her body language would say
Everyone around the way, gave up trying to get in it
It didn't matter how good your game was, she wasn't with it
On the block, bitches was jealous, but wouldn't admit it
Talk shit, and deny to everyone that they did it
Cause they regreted the long list of niggas that they let hit it
And no one ever gave them shit except McDonald's and did-dick
Smoking weed with thoughts of envy, whenever they lit it
She spoke intelligently and they bit it, always trying to copy
But when they tried to use her vocab, they sounded sloppy
She had a style, all her own, respectful and pure
I was sick in the head for her, and there wasn't a cure
[Jean Grae]
Don't you know that, time waits for no man
Not fate, it's all planned
I'm blessed just to know you
To haveloved and I've lost just to hold you all night
Can't find, a reason why
God came, between you and I
If I had the chance again, I'd never let you go
Hold tight to your love, cause you never know
Her eyes are brown and beautiful, yet empty and sad
I used to talk to her occasionally, and she was glad
That I wasn't just another nigga trying to get in it
So every now and then we'd stop and talk for a minute
I didn't have a gimmick so the minutes turned to hours
On her birthday, I gave her a poem with flowers
Then I took her out to dinner after her cousin's baby shower
We talked about, power to the people and such
We spent more time together but it was never enough
I never tried to sneak a touch, or even cop a feel
I was too interested, in keeping it real
Perfectly honest and complete
She would always call me "Carino " and never Technique
Bought me a new book to read every 2 or 3 weeks
Forever changing the expression of my thoughts when I speak
It was because of her, I even deaded all of my freaks
She convinced me, to stop hangin' out on the streets
To stop robbin' and stealin', from people like you
Instead I took her out to the Apollo and the Bronx Zoo
We sailed in Barrio and the Metropolitan too
Got to the point when I was either with her or my crew
So I decided one day, to tell her my feelings was true
I couldn't live without her so I told her, facing my fears
But honey's only response, was a face full of tears
She could only sob hysterically, holding me tight
I tried to speak, but she wouldn't stop until I left sight
I felt like a moth who got himself too close to the light
Except I didn't burn, I turned cold after that night
[Jean Grae]
Don't you know that, time waits for no man
Not fate, it's all planned
I'm blessed just to know you
To haveloved and I've lost just to hold you all night
Can't find, a reason why
God came, between you and I
If I had the chance again, I'd never let you go
Hold tight to your love, cause you never know
I went on with my life, college and my career
Ended up locked up like an animal for a year
Where the C.O.'s talk to you like they were the overseer
Then I got sent to the hole, when my exit was near
At night in my cell, I'd close my eyes and I'd see her
Hold her close in my dreams, but when I woke she disappeared
Just an empty cell until the state gave me parole in the summer
came back, intact and on track
But the fact of the matter, is I still felt cold
Even after my mother, hugged me, cryin' at home
My real niggas would catch me thinkin', out of my zone
Fuckin' lots of different women, but I still felt alone
Relatively well-known around the New York underground
But I kept thinking of her and how we used to be down
The sound of her voice, and the beautiful smell of her hair
Though gone physically, somehow it was still there
I had to do something, because the shit was too much to bear
So I went and visited the building where she used to live
The world looks a lot different after you do a bid
The way your life done changed
While primitive minds, still stuck in the same game
Like her cousin who was on the corner slangin' cocaine
Stepped in the lobby and tapped the button next to her last name
Her mom buzzed me up and hugged me up, like a mother oughta
But her facial expression changed, when I asked about her daughter
[Jean Grae]
Don't you know that, time waits for no man
Not fate, it's all planned
I'm blessed just to know you
To haveloved and I've lost just to hold you all night
Can't find, a reason why
God came, between you and I
If I had the chance again, I'd never let you go
Hold tight to your love, cause you never know
She told me that there was a note for me, that was left behind
She had left it there waiting, for such a long time
I was inclined to ask about it but she brought it up first
I saw a tear swelling up in her eye, and then she cursed
She told me where the letter was and I started thinking the worst
Reversed my position, stepped over and opened the door
And sure enough there was an envelope with my name on the floor
"Nobody loves you more than me, Carino" is what the letter said
"By the time you get to read this, I'll probably be dead
But when you left in '97 a part of me went to Heaven
I thank God at least I got to know what love really was
But it hurt me, to see what true love really does
Cause even though we never made love, you were all that there was
It was because I loved you so much that I had to make you leave
You made me doubt the way I thought, you made me want to believe
And then I slipped up, and I let you get close to me
It was hard to not be openly when people spoke to me
This was not the way I thought my life was supposed to be
Baby don't you see, I had a blood transfusion that left me with HIV
Hoped the end exists for me since late in 1993
I died a virgin, I wish I could've given myself to you
I cried in the hospital because there was no one else but you
Promise that you'll meet me in paradise inevitably
No matter what, I'll keep your love forever with me"
What happened for the rest of the day is still a blur
But I remember wishing that I was dead, instead of her
She was buried on August 3rd
The story ends without a sequel
And now you know why Technique don't fucking fall in love with people
Hold the person that you love closely if they're next to you
The one you love, not the person that'll simply have sex with you
Appreciate them to the fullest extent, and then beyond
Cause you never really know what you got, until it's gone

I'm not sure, but I have a lot of emotional songs, not like sad songs.. :\ I know a lot of sad songs too, but I just don't remember them all.
Oh, and just a question: There is a song by Sonata Arctica called "Still Loving You" as well as the one by the Scorpions. I have never listend to the Scorpion's version, but is Sonata Arctica's version a copy of this? The way I have read it, it seems so. Just want a clarificaiton.
The latest sad song to me is Poets Of The Fall ~Sleep~
And Cataclysm wow, the Scorpion's version is the original, and it's amazing......it's something that if you like Sonata Arctica's version, then you'll love the Scorpions
Here's the Scorpions full version

Thanks, nice to know that someone else likes Final Fantasy Music as much as I do. I have a few piano collections of theirs as well; Sen no Kotoba (FFX-2) sounds more sadder when played on piano lol. So does Cosmo Canyon (FFVII) as well o.O
B1uttercup, I'll listen to that song when I get on my computer that has sound ._.

Within Temptation's ~Memories~
Lyrics
Lyrics:
In this world you tried
Not leaving me alone behind
There's no other way
I'll pray to the gods let him stay
The memories ease the pain inside,
Now I know why
All of my memories keep you near
In silent moments
Imagine you'd be here.
All of my memories keep you near,
Your silent whispers, silent tears
Made me promise I'd try
To find my way back in this life
I hope there is a way
To give me a sign you're okay
Reminds me again it's worth it all
So I can go home
All of my memories keep you near
In silent moments
Imagine you'd be here
All of my memories keep you near
Your silent whispers, silent tears
Together in all these memories
I see your smile
All of the memories I hold dear
Darling, you know I'll love you
till the end of time
All of my memories keep you near
In silent moments,
Imagine you'd be here
All of my memories keep you near,
Your silent whispers, silent tears
All of my memories...

bayside - "winter"
When Winter falls
Next year, I'll be holding on
To anything nailed down
As for being patient, with fate and all, it's getting old.
And my mind is slowly changing
I'm calling all my oldest friends,
Saying "sorry for this mess we're in,"
And I'm waiting, waiting
For the Sun to come and melt this snow,
wash away the pain, and give me back control, control.
An angel got his wings,
And we'll hold our heads up knowing that he's fine.
We'd all be lucky to have a love like that in a lifetime.
Should we still set his plate?
Should we still save his chair?
Should we still buy him gifts?
And if we don't, did we not care?
It makes you think about the life you've led,
Shit you've done, things you've said.
And it's grounding, grounding.
I've been feeling three feet tall this month,
hardly indestructible.
But the snow melts, and the rhythm still goes on.
An angel got his wings,
And we'll hold our heads up knowing that he's fine.
We'd all be lucky to have a love like that in a lifetime.
Friends stay side by side,
In life and death you've always stole my heart,
You'll always mean so much to me, it's hard to believe this
These nights in vans,
These nights in bars,
Don't mean a thing with empty hearts, with empty hearts.
An angel got his wings,
And we'll hold our heads up knowing that he's fine.
We'd all be lucky to have a love like that in a lifetime.
Friends stay side by side,
In life and death you've always stole my heart,
You've always meant so much to me, it's hard to believe
So much to me, it's hard to believe
So much to me, it's hard to believe this.

Personal Songs:
For many reasons "Hear you me" by Jimmy Eat World always chokes me up, of course the first time I ever heard it was the evening after I lost my best friend from school.
"Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd...lost my brother
Tears in Heaven is such a sad, sad song...

i gotta agree, Tears in Heaven is a beautiful song. although it's debatable I think Soldier of Fortune by Deep Purple is just a great song that fits the description of sad
songs without words can express feelings almost as well as those with the most heartfelt lyrics, so here's a couple of sad instrumental songs
"River Flows in You" by Yiruma
"Altitudes" by Jason Becker (the fact that he cannot play guitar anymore and use his gifts to inspire people just makes this song even more amazing)
"Lenny" by Stevie Ray Vaughan (he made this song for his wife, he was amazing and will always be one of the best R.I.P SRV)

Well, he wrote it himself, so I mean, props for that. But I get sick and tired of idiots around here who go (And this is for Canadian and American Idol) "OMG THIS SINGER IS SO EMOTIONAL AND DEEP HE'S AWESOME" when he's singing a song he didn't even write, and some cases, didn't pick either.
