How does it work?

It's not important to me personally, but how does the whole reputation points system work? I'm a bit confused by it myself. Four or so positive additions equated to about 500 points and one negative shot down to around -16000. And then one more positive boosts that up to around -5000. Seems a bit erratic. =/

I'm curious. How does it work, exactly? I certainly don't want to take off any points from anyone without knowing how much a dent I'm actually putting in it.
