Somehow the manga went into more detail about things. Like how bad Guts childhood was, also it had the worse cliffhanger. :sad:

I read the manga first, and because people told me that the anime wasn't as good I just skipped it....

I think we need a new topic. What makes Berserk such a great manga?

What truly makes the Berserk great is the awesome story telling and characters.

The story in Berserk shows the best and worse in people which is one of the reasons I find Berserk so appealing.

The story really feels really well thought out. Even the minor characters are introduced early on and will used way later on. Laban and Owen are great examples. Also despite the long time it takes to release an episode, the story never loses momentum. Which some shonen series are guilty of.

Now to the characters. What I like about Berserk characters are that they are human. You can really relate to them on an personal level.

Also the character development in Berserk is incredible. When Guts was first introduced he appeared be selfish asshole filled with intense hatred. Then in the flashback chapters we see how Guts develop from a small child to the black swordsman.

Finally what is so great about Berserk is the complex Berserk universe. So many things happen so you most likely will miss out a lot on your first read. I have read Berserk quite a few times and there I missed on my previous time reading. You can really keep re reading Bersek with out ever getting bored.

So those are the main reasons why I think Berserk is great manga.

I think the most impressive art is Ganishka new god form. I mean it is HUGE and detailed.

I agree Berserk is merciless on the reader when it shows the darkest side of man.

Also what is not cliché about this manga is that Guts never had it easy in his whole life. His whole life was one struggle.

He's alive, can't say the same about most other characters in the series.

Is Guts out of the control of Causality or is Guts still being controlled by the laws of Causality?

I think Guts is still inside the boundaries of Causality but he can still make a difference. When Griffith was reborn, he managed to save a few people along with Casca who would have been dead if he were not there.

Also he manage to avoid death so often after the Eclipse that I doubt it is coincidence, the God Hands were surprised that he managed to live so long.That makes me believe that Guts should have died by now. The fact that he is still alive means that he still struggling against Causality.

So what your opinion on this topic?

Oh, well... Other than Gatsu, of course, I really like Farnese. She is phisically weak, but she has got the courage to change in a better person and to understand the importance of protecting people. She is somehow like me. Farnese and I have a really similar character.

I also like Shilke and Serpico, and in a certain way also Isidoro.

I liked Judo. He was loyal, a real friend. He was too clever. I was really sad when he died.

I really hate Grifis/Phemt. His behaviour towards the other people disturbs me, he only sees people as objects, not as possible friends, except for Gatsu. He's got the right things to be a skilled commander, but losing his humanity for his dream has made him losing something that he will never regain.

Sorry, I write the names with the Italian tranlitteration, because I personally think that the English translitteration is horrible.

haha "a bit dark" this IS Berserk we're talking about... yeah fits the series all right. Possibly the darkest most twisted brooding vicious and violent manga in existence, with the exception of guro and even then its not far off...

Judging from those posters... I dunno I think a live action movie could be made insanely well... Think about it, the problem most manga/anime to film adaptions have is dealing with either the outlandish energy powers/ hairstyles/ weapons/ abilities/ clothes and everything. Berserk is based/ set in a western style country/kingdom/land, in medieval times, so thats architecture and dress/outfits sorted, its all swords, spears and pikes mostly (apart from the Desciples), the most outlandish thing they'd ahve to deal with is the desciples and the magic that appears later on in the seires, but even then it could be done well and subtlely... question is... who would play the characters?

I think Christian Bale would do a kick ass Gutts, he can be savage dark and brooding, and has already played an insomniac and a mass murdering psychopath.

looking back i guess "a bit dark" was an understatement, i didn't mean the series but the posters, as in it was hard to see anything!

i suppose it helps i've been desensitised to this sort of thing from a young age, ie. started watching the guyver anime at about 10/12 and violence jack and devilman not long after that.

the good thing about berserk is that despite all the violence/gore etc. it's an interesting story and brings out a lot of emotion

I've been reading Berserk for a while. I've got about 20 more chapters left until I finish it. It's a great manga. Probably my favorite. Joinage?

I think Berserk will probably end at volume 45 at the least and 60 at the max.

I read somewhere that the author was aiming for approximately 100 volumes, but I don't know how reliable it was.

And his influence is a manga-ka who had a manga that went for 100 volumes. I don't think Miura is going to go for that mark at that rate the chapters are being released.

Yes, the infrequent breaks do indeed suck, but hopefully Miura will bring us frequent chapters once its over.

So far, Dark Horse has released 27 volumes. They'll reach volume 33 by the beginning of next year. So far I have up to 19. They're taking up a lot of space. :push:

And Emperor Ganishka is actually an apostle, but a more powerful one. It took Guts and Zodd to be able to attack his weak point in fog form. His utilization of the dark arts is probably why he's that powerful.

Hi... I am fully aware that Ganishka isnt a godhand... He basically just reborn himself to something greater than his current status by dropping into the demon incubator... He absorb all the evil from the Abyss and spill it all over to the real world, hence he is just one big pile of evil that is rampaging across the Midland...


Anyway just for side info there was a speculation that he was previously a wizard (like Dabai) before becoming apostles which explain why his power is far more superior than the rest of his kind...

It's a shame the studio can't make a couple of ova's or something showcasing what happened to Guts after the Hawks were killed. The series is good as is but it'd be like something almost completley different if they did a second series.

Agreed! They have to re-introduced a few character if they wanna make a 2nd season... Anyway that original anime should have included Wild, which make the series make more sense and more attractive as well (the battle of Wild was one of my favourite battle in the manga)...


The anime when I first watch it was like WTF... why suddenly all the monster popped out and everyone dies... its like suddenly appear for no reason... There was no premounition -Save for Zodd- of Eclipse as well... (which in the manga you can also hinted from SK and Wild as well)


Alot of my friends who watch anime before manga all thinks berserk ending sucks and they refused to pick up the manga... yet they still admit they like the golden arc alot... They even got misled thinking that Zodd is probably not even one them since he never appear again during/after the eclipse as well... It really suck big time... lol


Anyway as a sign of dedication to Berserk in the past I actually draw a few sketches from the manga... I hope it doesn look too ugly... :tongue:

Concerning the series, there's a remastered collection available of the first season for about $50. It's inexpensive as opposed to the other sets available.

Any anime dvd's are expensive over here in england. Volumes, not box sets mind you, but volumes with four or even three episodes! go for £20!

I hope Griffith takes down that Apostle. I mean, I hate Griffith, but this fight is boring me. Plus a God Hand shouldn't have trouble with a re-resurrected(Can't think of the word) Apostle. I hope he just flies up, cuts right directly through him, hits a vital spot, and that's that.

I'd much prefer catching up with Guts than have this fight drag out any farther, especially when it takes so damn long for the chapters to come out.

Miura said in an interview that the manga is already 60-70% finished. What I think is going to happen is that Griffith defeats Ganishka and the Kushan empire, thus becoming the supreme ruler over the land. His Neo Band of the Hawk represents his army to back up his military might. But, since Shierke said the Griffith is the Hawk of Darkness, who will bring terror upon the land, then probably Guts will have to stand up to him. The end of the manga will probably be a stand-off between Griffith and Guts, but I have yet to figure out where Guts can get those allies. Surely, not all in Elfhelm. And speaking of Elfhelm, I hope this chapter shows Guts and his band actually getting close to there. I want Caska to regain her sanity, so she becomes less of a hindrance.

The Behelit Apostle did use the tainted fetus for the Reincarnation Ceremony, but Gut's band also found a child with on a beach. This child looks remarkable similar to Guts and probably represents what Guts and Caska's child would've looked like had Femto not raped Caska.

It's drawn gore, so it's pretty easy to stomach. The action, art, and story all are very high quality, and even if I didn't like the gore, I could easily keep reading such an awesome story. The Golden Age Arc is my favorite story arc from any manga.
