Here it is. A Jazz fanclub. For all you Jazz lovers. Discuss your favourite Jazz songs, artist, events, instruments, just about anything that has to do with Jazz. Sub-genres can also be discuss, or If you just love the genre, feel free to join up too.
To join, simply grab a banner and post here. If I had not added you to the members list for quite some time after you have posted, just shoot me a message.
Note: Remember, official or not, whatever, as long as you requested, you're as good as in and can start posting right away. You just don't get on the members list right away if I'm not online.
To ensure you are welcomed to this FC thread, you shouldn't do the following:
1.
Hate or dislike Jazz
2.
Unreasonable flaming(flame someone for the right reasons, not because you don't like him/her)
3.
Being retarded
4.
Being a mean douchebag(it's ok to be a little mean, but try keep it on the sunny side)
5.
Spam(going off-topic a bit is fine but try not to stray too far)
6.
Not respect the opinions of other members(unless he/she makes no sense at all)
7.
Absolutely DO NOT POST one/two word posts, i.e. "Unofficial Welcome", "awesome", "thanks" and so on. Keep in mind post count in the FC section is on. If you plan on posting something like that, use rep instead, or post it along with a real post.
Now, just an fyi here. If you notice, we have a list of youtube videos in almost every page of the thread. These are our personal "jazz rounds", basically a list of songs a member post just for sharing with the other members. That's all.

I'll join in a heartbeat. The appealing thing about jazz for me, much like metal and classical, is that it is such a wide umbrella heading, covering a massive amount of varied styles, individual flavors, and spins. These are the thinking man's music. It is unfortunate that its sales are in the single digits, around 3-5% at best in the US, of the whole music market where prepackaged bullshit reigns supreme. It is very unfortunant because every single one of today's "artists" would be nobody if it wasn't for what people like Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Benny Goodman did. They forget that their innovations and determination paved the way for what we now recognise as popular music.

You're absolutely right about that,metalsoup111. Hmm, I thought that jazz music was doing good in the US. Guess I was wrong... It's even worse here in Malaysia, only about 8% of the country, excluding the senior people, listen or even have a jazz album in their daily soundtrack, and where I'm currently living, it's as if only two or three people actually listen to jazz. It's quite sad.

hey guys, i've been invited to join. I don't know much jazz but I'm always looking to broaden my musical horizons, and I love things like the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack and Logos Naki World (the intro to the Hellsing anime). What would you guys suggest I start out with to sort of ease my way into the genre? (while I'm at it, metalsoup, got any metal suggestions?)

Oh, i see you're still fresh with the music genre, I assumed too quickly you were a jazz fan, since I read your post in the Cowboy Bebop FC saying that you like the series because of the music and the movement so I assumed... haha

Hehe, I just thought it was kind of funny since it was in the joke FC section. Haha at those beats, I'll just remove that canada thing from the first post now... and Django Reinhardt, I've never heard of him but I'll definitely check out his music. Great videos by the way.

someone put it in the joke section? why? It was legit.
Django Reinjardt lost the use of all but 2 fingers on his left hand in a fire but was still able to become a master at guitar and do amazing solos, all with just his index and middle fingers.

TOTAL JOINAGE!!! lol i play in a jazz band for college. we have 5 different ones where i go. we are pretty good. :P
the thing i like about jazz (playing it anyway) is the freedom at which you can interpret it. its loosely structured compared to other types of music as far as rhythms and stuff. its just a lot of fun to play. i also love listen to ballad jazz and almost blues stuff to just mellow out. a nice mellow tenor sax song and i could sleep like a baby for days lol

@huey and MH: I do my damnedest to get great music out there by spreading the word and letting people know about it. The way I see it is like this: Today's pop music is like candy. Candy is good and people like it. Candy is okay every now and then, but it doesn't provide any real nourishment. We need substance that candy doesn't/can't provide. Jazz, classical, and metal, among others, provides that needed substance. It demands you sit back and think.
You listen and can't help but feel the emotion, the whole hearted sincerity, the honesty with which the music was composed and performed. It's deeper than what is just seen on the surface, unlike pop music. People literally gave there lives for this music because it was all they had. I'm saddened that America is culturally anemic. We've forgotten what is truly great and accepted mediocrity in its place.
But this also has a plus side. Because we're culturally anemic, it's very easy to amass a respectable collection of some of the most amazing and mind blowing music for pennies on the dollar. For what you'd expect to pay for one CD of some modern prepackaged crap, you can get up to 5 CD's of pure awesome. Such is life, I guess...

I'm feelin' you on that one too, Metal. Some of music's quality has indeed degraded over time. This makes me extremely indignant. I only enjoy REAL MUSIC! Not that over processed noise you hear now a days on the mainstream. What ever happened to the days when music told you stories, took you places, & reminded you of where you've been?

Dragonforce is a very cool band, although I much prefer if they were instrumental, but that's just me. By the way, nice post, blkorgasm.
The one who added the tags, reveal yourself, my random curiosity is distracting me.
Also, I've added a list of recommended jazz artists (partly thanks to metalsoup111) on the first post just in case one decides to go on a random song hunt.
metalsoup111

^^Dragonforce gets on my nerves. There is just something about them that doesn't grab me. Badass technical skill, but not much musicality IMO.
@blkorgasm: Marcus Miller rules! My favorite slapper. And here's a couple of my favorites...
Power of Soul - Jimi Hendrix arrangement by Marcus Miller
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqpxQ1Xf2us
^^About the last 3rd of the video is nothing, so when it sounds like the song is over, it is...
Moonlight Sonata - Ludwig Van Beethoven arrangement by Marcus Miller
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhbi8GSsqrU
Teen Town - Jaco Pastorius arrangement by Marcus Miller
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4y_KzTUwpwU
@Aiden: Metal is just as nuts and just as expansive a genre as jazz.

cool, ill check it out when you post it.
update: i decided to wait until after our 2nd concert to have my director burn the cd for me so i can just get all of our songs on a cd. unfortunately it will just be our band and nothing from the other 4 :S the songs we are playing for this concert are: Summer Samba So Nice, Chelsea Bridges, and Red Phantom Rides Again. they are really cool songs. but not too technical because we only had like 4 or 5 rehersals to work them up because of scheduling issues. we go on thanksgiving break right before our concert so we wont have a chance to meet before our concert which kinda scared me :S

11-20-2008, 10:26 AM
@huey, I only know very basic music theory, I pretty much just improv something then fix it. I'm not very good at making harmonies, i'm gonna play around with that until I'm a bit more comfortable. also, garageband annoys me because it's hard to do note-by-note dynamics. you have to edit the whole track, and if you move sections around, everything gets off. I'll upload some "guitar" sounding stuff I'm working on. for these last few ones I just add the notes one by one manually, instead of playing an instrument... the computer keyboard doesn't have a good enough response to let me play with good rythm.

have you tried to download finale or guitarpro? they are pretty good programs to write music on.

I have guitarpro but I neither know how to use that nor play a real guitar...
its actually not that bad of a program to learn how to use. oddly enough it can have nothing to do with a guitar since it has a wide variety of instruments you can plug in. i play VERY little guitar but i was just using it for composition purposes.
i seldom put guitar in it at all lol the only thing about it is that is all based on the guitar so you can only go as high or low as a guitar will let you. i usually make all my instruments based off the 7 string guitar so i have more variety.

I believe music, as an artform, should convey some kind of emotion from the performers, the composer, and from the atmosphere created by the music itself. Almost all free jazz I've listened to seems to only convey annoyance. But, hey, the musicians and fans find beauty out of atonal chaos so whatever works, I guess...
