Just saw 206. No sign of Kaien yet. For some reason, they allow some Lieutenants into the Captain meetings, but not all of them are there. Maybe some of them are busy working...*shrug*

I think its absolutely possible. Lets look at this.

He completed the academy almost as quickly as Gin, and he had the reiatsu of a VC going into the Academy even. This was before even the TBTP arc. . . Thats over a century to reach Captain, or near Captain level. I personally put Kaien above Ikkaku or Renji in terms of skill and strength, so I think he definitely could've reached bankai. Too bad we'll probably never know. . . :sad:

Oh yeah!! I think Kaien definitely reached Ban Kai!! And that thing about above Ikkaku and Renji, i think Kaien could've taken em both with just his Shikai!!

Welcome, everyone! And I'm giving co-ownership to Spectre for handling things while I was gone. Forgive my absence, my "illness" kept me away for a while, and I simply forgot about this!
As for the question, he was already Vice-Captain. Ukitake was trying to get him to become a Captain.

I know! I can't believe I was gone that long...I'm waiting for a timewarp to occur, and Ichigo is replaced by Kaien.
lol agreed. He's always been my favorite. I just re-read volume 16 (Viz media) with his first flashback. And his zanpakuto is crazy good, I love water types and polearms. And he's actually competent unlike Kira/Momo/Matsumoto/Renji/Omaeda/Nemu/Iba.
So competent he was killed... oh wait D:

Nice avatar. And although I hate to say it...It may have been necessary to kill him off. How easy would Bleach have been with someone like him around?

lol Yea. Nejibana' abilities and Kaien' stance was just undefeatable. Close range fighters dont stand a chance(including Ichigo).

If Kaien were alive, there won't be any rabid Rukia fans saying "Rukia can defeat Espada". Bleach would be less crappy for sure.
Yeah; this isn't saying much but his is the best death in the series. It's a shame Kubo doesn't pull the plug on other characters, there are so many times he could have killed off important people that I think would have made for better writing (Renji dying at Byakuya's hands, Rukia dying against AA, Hitsugaya getting killed by Aizen etc) not just because I dislike the characters but because, as we see with Kaien, a death can make a good impact on a story and multiple other characters.

I agree. And I think it would have been poetic for AA to kill Rukia, then Ichigo discovers her body and defeats AA. With their resemblance, it could be fun.
Although...I don't see how Ichigo could kill AA without a really bad plotkai.

Where would Kaien be now, if he hadn't been killed?
Given the amount of years I'd say he'd either be a Captain or would be easily the strongest VC and given the way the plot has gone he probably would have been prominent in the SS arc or he would have been owning shit up in the Fake K-Town fights laying waste to fraccion and possibly giving lesser Espada a run for their money.

I'm of the opinion that Bleach would be turned on its head if Kaien were still alive. The betrayal and Vizards would have occurred, since they happened about 10 years prior. However, Kaien would have either taken the place of one of the captains who turned Vizard, or stuck with the 13th and turned his favorite pupil Rukia into a powerhouse. This would negate the opening of Bleach, where she nearly gets killed and has to transfer her powers to our dear friend Ichigo.

here's a question to bump this thread: how come Ganju and Kūkaku are the only people who don't remark on Ichigo's resemblance to Kaien, though they are his brother and sister?

And it has been noted that everyone remarks on it except for his family members. I'm not really sure why, though. Any speculations, people?
A couple theories that come to mind are that 1) they'd rather not talk about it, or 2) they're too close to the source to realize it.
Still doesn't answer why though...Thoughts?

Yes, those are two very good reasons, but I would have expected Ganju to stop dead in his tracks for at least one tenth of a second the first time he saw Ichigo, because he was so very sensitive on the whole issue of his brother.
