The Wall - Pink Floyd
Heretic Pride - The Mountain Goats
The Kreisler Album - Joshua Bell

woah, sir. i will not take my music cues on nirvana from someone who's location is "listening to nirvana" and who's profile pic is kurt (donald) cobain.

and there was no musical revolution in the 90's. don't get me wrong, i love the 90's music. most of my top 10 albums are from the 90's. but there wasn't a revolution. and if there was one, nirvana didn't lead it.

Aidan
02-13-2009, 11:55 PM
yeah, 60's, 70's, and perhaps 80's are much more interesting in terms of the birth of genres like punk, metal, and psychedelic.

Tool is one of the greatest progressive metal bands ever. Enough said.

metalsoup111
02-14-2009, 04:28 PM
If any band really forged an individual sound in the grunge movement it was not Nirvana. Bands like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains wear definately better musicians and were much more progressive to the genre. Kurt was a hideous guitar player and the bassist guy just kind of doinked. What Nirvana had was good drummer. Dave Grohl is wicked on the skins.

Imo, Tool was probably the most revolutionary band to kick 90's pop music's pansy ass...

@ aidan

i grew up playing in orchestras and taking music theory/history classes. you're not missin' that much, don't worry about it. lol

i agree with soup; try listening to a bunch of different things. for instance, i'd never listened to a note of avant-garde music until i picked up some mr. bungle (who i'd heard about through faith no more's mike patton). now i can't put the stuff down.

branch out and find something new that you like and then find that group's contemporaries and keep on going. your musical library will double within a year and you'll start listening to shit you'd have never thought.

e.g., so and so collaberated with so and so, and they worked with david bowie, and he did a bit with whatshisface, and now i love OutKast. true story.

You're damn right, MetalSoup. Too bad Layne Staley had to die too. I heard the AIC has a new volcalist, and that a new album is in the works. Staley's vocals were awesome.

Tool's music is about instumental(vocal) tone quality, overall psychodelic atmosphere, insane performance accuracy, and shear rhythmic complexity...

instrumental vocal? that is an oxymoron, my good sir!
i know what you mean tho. :p

i understand what they are about, i guess. i just don't see what's so fantastic about them. although i don't quite feel "psychodelic" coming from them, they do have a distinct atmosphere. i will applaud that.

performance accuracy? i'm supposed to respect a band more because they can play their own songs right? that shouldn't be a merit; that should be a requirement. they wrote the damn thing, they might as well play it right, too.

and i grew up playing in orchestras and the like. the "rhythmic complexities" that tool uses in their songs is commonplace in a lot of romantic and neo-classical compositions. i guess it's just not that spectacular to me.

but hey. to each their own, right?

Meh, I've gotta agree with you there, Paradise. I never really did like Tool very much either, I guess. If I wanna listen to something somewhat psychedelic but techinical, Then I'd much rather listen to Cynic's first album.

metalsoup111
02-15-2009, 07:04 PM
^^Cynic is fucking nuts...

@paradise: lol. Instrumental and/or vocal tone quality. In our age of ProTools and other recording software in which is possible to completely alter pretty much everthing about recorded performance of musicians and singers. Things such a timbre, attack, and pitch can be effortlessly changed. Knowing that, it is still sad that a good performance is reason to praise a band. I don't think it would be to far out there to say Tool could be considered, among many others, as part of the "classical" music of our day...

paradise_found
02-15-2009, 07:27 PM
the problem with classifying a "music of our day" is that there are so many definitive genres to consider. most things contemporary have an extremely LOW level of musicality to it all.

while i am a HUGE outkast fan, i still think the majority of their music is low quality. lyrically, however, they are leaps and bounds above their contemporaries.

and progressive bands like tool and (sigh) dream theater could indeed be considered the "classical" music of our time. (they do create rock-operas after all. nothing is more representative of the classical era than an opera) and yet bands like these seem to fall into grooves over time, thus diminishing their "composer" like status.

i think experimental music is the next big wave that music will take. or at least i hope so. i think it's the only thing that's really fresh anymore; the songs aren't repetitive within themselves, much less from song to song.

let's just pray this fucking indie wave goes away real soon. dirty fuckin' kids that can't play their roommate's guitar worth a shit but still try while wailing their own lyrics wrong in an off-pitch yet monotonous stream of syllables while wearing a busted up flannel shirt that they either got for thirty cents at the goodwill or fifty bucks at urban outfitters and you'll never know which.

goddamned indie fucks.

Aidan
02-15-2009, 07:41 PM
The problem with indie is that as a genre label it's applied far too broadly, and so you have completely different things both labeled "indie" because they don't sound generic or poppy enough... also, there's such a range of quality. I won't argue that there's a LOT of shit out there.. but there are also amazing bands like The Mountain Goats. I hate the indie cred thing where the more esoteric a band is the "better" it is, though. That's utter bullshit. Newsflash: Often, bands get popular because THEY'RE GOOD. And just because they get popular doesn't mean they automatically suck.

Fornicaras

goddamned TALENTLESS indie fucks. some indie is really fresh, the musicians doing a lot of new and different things. but usually not.

cynic is pretty righteous. i just stopped following them after their fifteen year hiatus.

really? i think "one hot minute" is their best. everything after "californication" just sounds like a rehash of "californication". and "by the way" and "stadium arcadium"? SAME ALBUM.
