Quoting myself from another site:
A little more than a month from now will mark thirty years to the day since Mobile Suit Gundam began airing. (The precise date is April 7th).
Of course, Bandai would've been planning something, but there was no indication as to what that might be.
Until today.

Deacon Blues, over at MechaTalk, came through with this little gem:

Title: Unknown

Mechanic Design: Katoki Hajime
Character Design: Suzuki Tatsuya

Mobile Suit: Phantom Gundam Unit No.7

EARTH FEDERATION PHANTOM SWEEP TEAM
Hughes Curro: Male. Age 32. A veteran officer who leads the Phantom Sweep special forces unit charged with hunting for Zeon remnants. He has a bitter experience in which his unit was annihilated in the past.

Sherry Allison: Female. Age 24. She was serving as a test pilot but was assigned to the special forces unit as a replacement.

ZEON FORCES INVINCIBLE KNIGHTS
Erik Blanque (Blank): Male. Age 20. A young officer whose family is a distinguished family in the Principality of Zeon. He takes command of the “Invincible Knights” in order to execute a counterattack operation against the Earth Federation Forces.

Story: The time is Universal Century 0081. One year has passed since the war and although the world was regaining order, small-scale battles continued in various places by the Zeon remnants who still continue to resist. During the situation, a veteran soldier of the Earth Federation Forces is appointed to a cleanup operation of the Zeon remnant forces. Feelings mix on the battlefield as the young Zeon officers advance their secret strategy for the revival of Zeon…
Now here is what's interesting. Within ten minutes of Deacon's post going up, we learned from Mark064, also at Mechatalk, that Hajime Katoki had recently revealed the latest of his redesigns of Kunio Okawara's M-MSV mobile suits: The RX-78-7 "7th Gundam", which, if the naming conventions of its predecessors are followed, would be the RX-78-7 Gundam Unit 7 "G07".
Both are pictured below, Okawara's on the left, Katoki's on the right.

What will this be? An OVA, a full-fledged anime, a movie? No idea. A novel, like Unicorn was, or a manga? Possible, though IMO the former's not bloody likely.
Could it be a hoax? Well, the 7th Gundam redesign probably isn't. There's always a slim chance the production news might be, but I certainly hope not.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My opinion?
Assuming this is real, I'm totally psyched for it. That Gundam looks awesome, and I think it would look badass animated (Though I wish Katoki-dono'd kept a little bit more of the original's blue, but that's minor.)
Plus, IF the above-listed characters are the main ones, then there's a chance the Gundam pilot is either a woman(which would be awesome) or a "South Burning"-style older veteran character, which would be so badass on so many levels...

I hope this is for real...I think it could be so freakin' awesome...
(Must...not...get...hopes...up! Risk...disappointment!)

What'd y'all think?

They are going back to Universal Century. I hope it is real. I like the new gundam design. I will go with movie. This wouldn't be the first time a woman piloted a gundam through. I believe one did in Zeta Gundam. She piloted the Gundam mach 2 after Camille got Zeta gundam if I am not mistaken. However, I am very interested in the news that you found.

Emma Sheen. Piloted a Gundam MkII before Kamille even hijacked the one he piloted, actually. Then later piloted Kamille's after he got Zeta, since hers'd been sent over for the guys at Anaheim to dissect. Then there's Karen Joshua in 08th MS Team, who piloted one of the team's three Gundam Ground-Types. And of course, ill-fated test pilot Christina Mackenzie, who test-piloted the Gundam NT1. The CE has a few as well, and there's Asuna in Ecole du Ciel.

Anyway, this ain't the place to talk about chick pilots in other series.

An OVA would be great.

Yeah, it would - something like 0083 or 08th MS Team's length.
Though at this point, I'd be happy with even just a movie...as long as it's well done and has a proper ending. *glares evilly at Char's Counterattack and F91*
(Don't get me wrong, I love 'em both. But CCA has the most blatant "Conflict resolution by random Deux Ex Machina" I've ever seen, and F91 doesn't have a proper ending at all.)

According to this site, it is going to be a new series. Here is the site:

That site's information is copied verbatim from ANN: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-02-23/new-series-said-to-be-revealed-in-gundam-ace-manga-mag

I'll also point out that according to that site, this is the RX-78-7:
http://anime-media.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/gundam00s2-1.jpg
Not only does that look nothing like the RX-78-7, but you can tell at a glance that it's a fanmade custom mod based on the Hi-Nu Gundam. The Red Unicorn on the shield is the personal crest of Amuro Ray, who in 0081 is in house arrest on Earth.

Here is the latest news
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-03-11/bandai-head/no-plans-for-2009-gundam-tv-series
It appears that there will be no new TV series for 2009.

Man, I'm gonna be PISSED if "0081" turns out to be a manga or (worse yet)novel like Unicorn.
Though I suppose the announcement is slightly ambiguous, so there's still a chance it might be a movie or an OVA, even if it isn't a full series.
Just as long as it's not a stupidly short little ONA like Stargazer was.

justin43

it is not going to be a series. :crying:

General consensus on most sites seems to be that it'll probably be an OVA - something like 08thMS or 0080's length.

A low budget videogame instead of an actual animation project. Oh well, at least the character design's pretty neat Hopefully, it's just a tie-in to an OVA or something.

I think I am the last person who remembers that there already was a PS3 gundam game, and it sucked. FUCK why don't they finish One Year War before making something new and retarded! CURSE YOU JAPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAN!!!!!!!!!!!

AND HOW CAN SOME ONE BE YOUNG WHEN THE WAR WAS 2 YEARS AGO? HE IS 32, I WOULD SAY THAT HE LOST HIS UNIT BACK IN ONE YEAR WAR NOT WHEN HE WAS YOUNG!

On this day in 1979, Mobile Suit Gundam first hit the airwaves, marking the birth of the GUNDAM franchise.
Now, thirty years later, it's still going pretty strong - at least in its native Japan.

HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY, GUNDAM!!!!

And on that note, a really cool video was recently produced on that occasion, though somewhat belatedly...

Called Gundam Perfect Mission, and features one Gundam each from every animation in the franchise's history, except Stargazer.
