topic: now here's the real question: how will naruto respond to hinata's open love for him? he can't just play it off like she's just acting weird (like he always does).

I'm not sure. Naruto really isn't the romantic type, but I can't see him outright rejecting her. He's such a random character that it's hard to predict exactly how he would react. There will definitely be a lot of reflection on his part about the role she played in his life up to that point. After all, at the beginning of the series she (along with with Iruka, the ramen shop owners, and the Third Hokage) was one of the few people that didn't hate him.

Even before most other people even acknowledged him, she felt love for him. Her love clearly remained strong for him, even throughout the years of the timeskip. The fact that she entered a fight she had no hope of winning in an attempt to save Naruto pretty much proves that she truly does love Naruto.

Hinata is definitely the stronger of the two, but shikamaru has amazing tactical skills, which could turn the odds in his favor. It really depends on the setting and situation in which they'd fight.

I'm doubtful that she'll be in fighting condition any time soon. Healing takes a while, and she's sustained some pretty serious injuries (and since that chakra blade that Pain stabs her with apparently disrupts chakra, it probably will make healing difficult). I'm hopeful that she'll be featured soon, but I doubt she'll be fighting. I personally predict that after defeating Deva Pain, Naruto and maybe the others will go to confront Nagato, who realizes it's hopeless and tells Konan to stand down or flee. I can't help but feel that there will be more talking than fighting when Naruto finally confronts him. He probably won't see Hinata until later (though I'm sure he'll be relieved know for sure that she's alive).

Yea Sakura for the longest time, other than her healing, has been all but useless. I really like the first page of the latest chapter. Seems kinda like Sakura is kinda feeling a bit of that uselessness right now seeing as she did nothing but stand around and watch as Naruto was about to be hauled away by Pain....

Well, Sakura didn't know the exact circumstances, she probably meant that she shouldn't have put herself at risk. Though if Hinata hadn't gone in Naruto would have probably been captured and wouldn't have ended up in eight-tails mode and then going back to sage mode and beating pain. So in a way, Hinata was a deciding factor in Naruto's fight against pain.

As for sandraccoon's question, I personally favor pairing her with Naruto, mainly because that's who she wants to be with and I want her to be with whomever she wants. I suppose pairing her with Kiba would work too, as he has been shown to care about her. Those are the only pairings I could really look at with a straight face though. NejiHina is just the beginning of the weird pairings out there.

I don't know. Neji was specifically said to be the greatest prodigy of anyone in the Hyuuga family, so I doubt she'll outright surpass him overall. She might surpass him in certain sets of skills though. I think her Byakugan may be stronger than his (Neji is mentioned to have a range of 800 meters, while Hinata has been shown to be able to use her Byakugan at a range of 10 kilometers, over twelve times that of Neji's) and I think I read somewhere that she learned a fair amount of Genjutsu from Kurenai. She is also mentioned to have a great degree of physical flexibility.

I don't think the mark is an issue. I think it's like a shock collar (which we know Hinata would never use). Honestly, I don't think Hinata will ever be on equal grounds as neji Byakugan/Taijutsu-wise, but I think she would be able to crush him with (some)genjutsu & medical techniques (although there are no indications in the manga, in the anime-filler-mix, she has shown that she has chakra control on par with medical ninja) + I think she would have a better overall grasp on it than Neji could. XD
