I don't know if I'd call him the absolute best; I still think the older Nas and Common are pretty high up there too, but Lupe's definitely got talent and I've liked a lot of his music. Gotta appreciate artists who don't always bend to what's popular i.e auto-tune, pop-rock, etc. etc.
One of my favorite performances/songs with him:

^Lol I dont' think I've heard of them. <.<
Also lol TBH I used to hate on Wayne, but at this point I'm indifferent just because he's doing what he can to make serious money and if I was in his position, my broke ass would probably do the same. I'm not a fan though; I think he sounds like a chronic smoker and his voice is annoying as shit, but I think Wayne's whole appeal is that he can ride over club beats well enough, so people don't really focus on some of the weird ass lyrics he's coming up with.
TBH I'll listen to club bangers all day long but the music with real meaning is where I stay. TI's good like you said, his last album was a bit jump forward that I didn't see coming; looks like getting locked up did him some good lyrically. Actually now that you mention illmatic, that reminds me "If I Ruled The World" Ft. Lauryn Hill used to be my anthem, he actually did a remix on that not too long ago and it's sick as hell.

A new artist you shouldnt sleep on is Blu....check out Blu & Exile - Below The Heavens album which IMO was the best hip hop album of 07....

Well is he the best right now? I'd say yes. Lil' Wayne hasn't been the same since after Drought 3. k'naan's ok. Saw him live once at some british festival and heard his album ,good to see a mali getting somewhere in the music industry.
Anyone into Aesop Rock? i had to read through the lyrics of daylight like ten times to understand all the metaphorics but still a nice tune.
Edit:: Found it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZjXX3gmZYk
@BLkorgasm: Tis a tune, its because grime/electronica is more popular these days in britain, but hip-hop is mixing with dubstep/grime at the moment and is making a come back i believe. Grime is...interesting,kind of mainly macho bullshit and there are lots of dicks affiliated, lacks hip-hops chill factor.
Example of grime(Very old now btw):

I always hold that hiphop has been given back to the caretakers that helped it thrive. This I justify by the growing movement to defy the mainstream commercialized overprocessed bullshit that is on every gotdamn urban radio station and music channel out there.

that song is pure gold. same with the hidden track on technique's song "dance with the devil" with diabolic. overly brutal? perhaps. but its an amazing verse regardless. there is great hip hop music out there in the underground. the problem is, as you said, commercial rappers floodin the airwaves and the record stores. its my personal opinion, as ironic as it seems, that illegal downloading will save music by giving underground rappers a way to reach fans and reverse the way things are going right now.

Haven't touched an Eminem CD since the Marshall Mathers LP. Everything after that album never came close to it.
Q-Tip brought it all back for me with The Renaissance album. I get so tired of listening to the same whored subjects that so many rappers rap about today, but Q-Tip came back with something fresh. Best album of 2008 for me personally.
Its official now.
Really? Eminem Show is just as good lyrically and Em is serious and personal all over it and touches many topics. You should check it out..
Anyway you guys should check out that new Cuban Linx II...very solid effort by Rae...Joe Budden - Escape Route is a great piece of work...Man on the moon is dope as well...Blueprint 3 is okay didnt like Jays direction musically and guest wise on that album...

Right now, I'm digging me some Kid Cudi. Always been a Jay stan. G.O.A.T. material tbh. There's also all those underground acts that I enjoy too; Atmosphere, JMT, Eyedea and Abilities, Benefit, IT, Murs, Living Legends, Vakill, Apathy, Mac Lethal, Aesop Rock, etc.
Then there's dudes like Outkast, Wu-Tang, Blackstar, Gangstarr, Jurassic 5, Hieroglyphics, Pharcyde, CRS, De La Soul, Blu & Exile, DMX, Cunninglynguists, etc.
Ah, classic ole' Pac and Biggie too. Can never get enough of those two dudes. Then there's Nas and Jay-Z. Two of the greatest mainstream rappers to ever bless the game. Diversity in your hip-hop is great.
I'm currently really digging me some Lupe, got back into him recently after picking up Fahrenheit 1/15. Downloaded Kanye's discography, he had some great music back in the day. CD is one of my favorite albums. Jay-Z is my pick for GOAT so I'm always bumping some of that. Then there's Cudi, Man on The Moon is AOTY, I don't care what you say. It will win album of the year, it's a phenomenal album.
I also love hip-hop instrumental collaborative acts like Nujabes and people like Shing02. They make some beautiful music, if any one knows of any other acts like Nujabes/Shing02, recommendations would be great.
That brings me to my last point, my favorite hip-hop group out right now: Blue Scholars. Amazing duo, they make fucking amazing music. Check them out if you haven't already.

Damn, Third Eye Vision is worth copping? I picked up Full Circle and that shit is just banging.
Yeeh, I was just throwin my two cents in this shit. There's far more rappers that I should have acknowledged but honestly didn't remember or have the time to. I'm starting to try and listen to more diverse stuff. Like Shing02, his stuff is just siick. Especially on collabs with Nujabes.

Blu & Exile* and yeah Below the Heavens is an amazing album.
The Warm Up was super hot. One of my favorite mixtapes ever. J. Cole is my favorite freshman right next to Cudi. The Come Up wasn't so hot though, but it's all good. He murked the shit outta Jay on A Star Is Born, he definitely deserves some respect.

I first heard Below the Heavens at least a year ago. Then and now, that album is still one of the most well-composed Hip-Hop albums I've ever heard. That shit is incredible.
