As one of my top anime ever watched I decided to make a fan club for ergo proxy seeing as I did not find one here.

@Raz: Welcome. We're kinda short on members right now as you have noticed, so if you if you know anyone likely to have some interest in discussing EP, would you mind dragging them kicking and screaming into here? Not that they should be resisting all that hard; Ergo Proxy is well worth talking about imo. And yeah, it is dark. Between that and being post-apocalyptic, how could I not like it?

Something else: I have always felt that using the quiz competition battle to introduce some background into the story was sheer genius. Agree/disagree?

Totally ... at first it seemed like a filler but then it actually provided information and was fun to watch to boot.

I was so excited to find out who the 1st proxy was ^^

I like how the anime ended cuz the whole dark gloomy theme of it actually had an enjoying warmth at the end.

Not sure if we should put stuff in spoiler tags or not for future potential members who have just started watching it. What you guys think?

Yeah, for the first couple of minutes I was like wtf? But then it turned out to be both very good and very clever.

Also, I agree, the contrast between the dark themes in most of the anime and what happens at the end made the whole thing better and finished it off nicely.

And I think that at this stage so long as we're not mentioning specific details it's probably okay. Once we get a decent sized group of members, if most of them have seen it then we can probably just go witht he flow and forget about spoilers altogether.

Based on what I read about it I knew I was going to like it. Glad I was right.

This was also probably one of the most educational series I've seen. Word to Belrog on pointing how good the references are. My fav. eps. were the one where Pino is in that Disney World parody, the game show that turns out to be an actual fight with a Proxy, and the one where they're out in the middle of no where on the rabbit with no wind. Only problem I had was with Re-l being so damn hot (very distracting)...

I didn't mind it all that much actually - a pleasant change from an abundance of overdone humour like you get in some other anime (mutter, mutter...) Definitely a really well placed scene though, monotonous or otherwise.

So vincent being a proxy, even though it was revealed early on in the series, was anyone expecting it? i sure wasnt (we didnt even know what proxys were lawl)

joinage please! ergo proxy threw me for a psychological loop, lol if you aren't used to stuff like that it's a total mind fuck. i loved all the references at the end of the eps though, i learned a lot.

i thought vincent was a little suspicious from the beginning since he always was being chased by monad and was more resilient than a standard human when falling/getting kicked through walls/being clumsy/etc lol

the only thing i wished was that the fights between the proxies were a little longer, or maybe some more awesome shotgun play from Real. i also liked how the series was at first like a detective story.

Haha I'm so glad I stumbled upon this FC. For whatever it's worth, I'd like to join. This is by far my favorite anime ever. Favorite character is probably Vincent because in the beginning I hated him and by the end I thought he was pretty badass. I agree that I would have liked longer fights but I loved every moment of this series and will watch it again.

Agreed, but Ergo Proxy has never been that popular. I prefer it that way, personally. It doesn't get ruined by everyone and their mother talking about it and dragging it down to a level of silliness and overanalyzing it.

Then again Ergo Proxy might be in serious need of over-analysis.

EDIT: A while back, when searching for the last episode, I came across a blog that really analyzed it. I was like: wow. This person really went deep into the show. If I find it, I'll post the link. It was about 4 pages of really interesting stuff and myth references.

Ah that would be sweet. I found an entire website dedicated to explaining RahXephon, another favorite series of mine. I'm reading http://anikimeiski.blogspot.com/2006/08/will-pino-survive-ergo-proxy-ep23.html posted on page 2 right now, and now I need to rewatch the whole series :amused:

ergo proxy is a total mind fuck if you let it go to your head, but i liked it because of that. it made me think and didn't make me feel like i was just degrading my intelligence with another "standard 5 out of 10" anime show.

O and personally i agree with ergo proxy not being over analyzed. Some things ... just need to be accepted. IN example, why do we live? Just accept it or dont and no need to rip the fur from the skin to figure out what it is.

Im actually thinking the opposite, i dont think ergo proxy can be over-analysed. That episode wher real gets ready for her trip to find vincent with iggy for example(the town with the machines but no people). Thats a perfect allegory of the myth of sysyphus (spelling).

Or during the episode where vincent realises hes ergo proxy (bookstore), i found the modification of descarte's famous saying (cogito ergo sum) was rather deep and intriguing .(i think thererefore you are)

nice, i think most people on their first time watching it will be more interested in the story than all the allusions to books and philosophical ideas that u can find seeded throughout the series if you look for them.

I just got the box set yesterday. Watching the dub. It's not bad, it definitely makes it slightly easier to concentrate.

Just finished, it was pretty good actually. And I learned a lot that I didn't pick up on the first time. If I watch it again (and I definitely will) I'll be going with the dub just because the subs look hideous and the dub voices + DVD quality are great on the TV as opposed to shinsen on the laptop.

wras, the dub is on youtube (legally)(Under Sciencefiction television shows). You can probably get it in HD or at least bigger than the average youtube vid.

I just got a DVD box set too.. The video quality was shit though, looked more like I was watching a VHS than a DVD :/ To top it off some episodes had some unknown series popping up and jamming up the playback completely and making the player unresponsive until shutdown. :S
Really would think that anime would get at least some love nowadays, due to rising popularity but apparently no, it seems the set was created by someone with their left hand. I called the store I bought it from and they agreed with me that the quality was sub-par, but obviously they only could just switch it to some other series or movie as this same quality lapse was present, one would think, on all their copies and the one they inspected at least.

I originally saw the series fandubbed and I have to say the fandubs beat the official subs by a mile too. Well, thats enough about me bitching.

Who was your favourite character? I really liked Vincent myself.
