Lol, my favorite scene is when Renji first shows up saying that Rukia looks like a human. Then he says Ichigo is 2000(?) years behind him. They need to bring him back around to there, when he was working non-stop on his skills to match Byakuya. The role he's in now diminishes his character.

And yeah, maybe I'll work on a Renji sig soon.

I admire Renji's persistence. During the SS arc, he only gave up the (single-handed) rescue of Rukia when he was on the verge of death and even then, he continued to help Ichigo in his bids to rescue her. That in itself shows a lot of dedication, I can't help but admire that.

My favourite scene? The flashback, for sure. It showed us for the first time exactly who he was, where he came from, and that he has a lot more substance than what the audience initially thought.

I hate the way he's been portrayed lately; he's far too good a character to be nothing more than comic relief.

renji was my first favourite character from bleach. and im impressed with how much hes been changing throughout the seasons.

my favourite scene of his? if you want a silly fangirl answer, when he first got thrown into a cell in the beginning of the series and hes shirtless and talking to zabimaru. *faint*

if you want a serious answer... i definitely have to agree with pyre, i LOVElovelove the flashback episode showing how he and rukia met each other and whatnot, and how their friendship progressed to what it has become. obviously he has a LOT of love for that girl and it broke my heart when he was like :( when she was welcomed into the kuchiki clan (if im not mistaken on that happening). :love:

Yes he is, which I think is one of the reasons why I don't hate the fillers as much as other people. They can treat Renji better than the canon sometimes. The new movie certainly treated him well.

I do like that one but I think it needs to be combined with the flashback. It showed how deeply he cares for Rukia, contrary to most of what we had seen before then. There's hints of it when he's talking to Rukia when she's in the 6th Division cell, but those are a lot clearer after seeing the flashback.

I love both of Renji's flashbacks actually, but the flashback with Rukia shows the very essence of his character. Well... it shows that and that he is hopeless at Kido. :bigsmile:

What I want to know is what the deal is with Renji's infamously unfinished conversation (as far as the readers are aware) with Urahara. The hell did he ask the shopkeeper about? I've looked for clues in the HM arc but aside from him tagging along with Rukia hinting that it has something to do with Ichigo, I dunno.

Maybe he needs to have good control over his Bankai as well. I believe Bakkie-chan (honourable Captain Kuchiki Byakuya) said that he needed 10 years of training to get proper control over his.

AA brought Rukia to his glass jar head and decided to gloat; he deserved to get owned so did Rukia.

Renji's had plenty of opportunities with unnecessary help! Ururu did nothing against Ilforte; he won when his limit was lifted. Ishida's brains did shit all to Szayel once Mayuri came along and solved everything in 2 seconds and now he's just made to look dumb. I was really hoping Renji would use his own brains to beat Szayel, he doesn't do the amusingly stupid brute very well and he just turns out like a carbon copy of Ichigo.

Ah well at least there's always filler Renji! In the latest ep he was pretty badass.

Renji's not a bad fighter he just has very very bad luck with who he comes up against lol.

Let's see, canon wise:-

Ishida:- This was so quick that I think people forget about it. He definitely defeated Ishida.

Ichigo (take 1):- He was winning here till Ichigo somehow unleashed his resolve, unaware that he was doing so.

Ichigo (take 2):- Again, similar, but this time Ichigo knew his resolve was being released and Renji ended up losing once more. (To the as yet unnamed guetsuga tensho no less)

Byakuya - Who ever suspected that he would be able to beat Byakuya, even though he now had bankai? He did cut him and force him to one knee which was more than Byakuya was expecting.

Aizen - Oh come on. Both he and Ichigo in this battle and still, nothing. Renji was already too injured to use Bankai for a start. If Ichigo and Renji had one back then, then Bleach's screwed logic would be even more bizarre.

IlForte - One of the only fights he's actually won in canon, and even then it wasn't on his own was it?

Szayel - It was his weird thinking of releasing his bankai and getting the clones to destory themselves and thus the ceiling that forced Szayel into going into his released form. He also injured Szayel (though also himself) a lot before that by tying him to him with Zabimaru and using Kido. But of course Szayel just ate one of his fraccicon and was fine. :suspicious: Szayel had so many typical 'creepy-scientist' type moves that I don't think there would have been any way for anyone but Mayuri to defeat him.

Out of those, it would look better if people hadn't been trying to help him in the IlForte fight. All his other battles were just very bad luck.

Filler:-

Bount

Okay yes, he did not defeat the bitto, but he did do enough to rescue the kid. His role there was more defensive anyway, and do the bitto count as an opponent? Probably just a case of being outnumbered.

Renji is the one who wounds Gessell though before the doll kills it's owner.

After that he helps with those being affected by Ritz, even though Zabimaru is damaged due to using Higa Zekko.


Stand alone filler

He defeated that arrancar in Urahara's basement, even if the animators couldn't be bothered to animate him and just reused shots from the Byakuya fight. :suspicious: (I'm serious, they did do that! :weird: ).

Annoying Princess Arc

He didn't have any fighting here (as far as I recall) but he was the one who got the proof of the bakkudo's existence to Yamamoto.

Zanpakuto Arc

Zabimaru - Sure he gets messed around at first, but then using kido and also realising when snakey's zabimaru breaks that he can use Higa Zekko? I hate to admit it but I love this fight. :sweatdrop:

I've not seen the latest eps of this arc yet so I'll have to leave it there.

The Films

Bankai over-usage to the extreme, but hey, using zabimaru as a ladder is cool. Pointless, but cool lol. :odd:

And there I shall stop before I get carried away (though I think it might be too late :sweatdrop: ). I don't know what is more worrying: That I bothered to type all this, or that I did not look anything up...

Or (dare I say it) greater tactical ability? I don't think there's anything wrong with his techniques and/or Zabimaru, it's more his predictability in battle than anything which irks me. He's certainly capable of thinking on his feet, but his plans (more often than not) usually involve him screwing himself over in the process.

I agree that the fight against Zabimaru is my favourite to date, mostly because it was a fine display of tactical skill (in the end).

Wow, omg I HATED his dubbed voice in that viddie, usually I watch the subs, so, his voice in japanese sounds ALOT more manly, along with all the other males, I mean the little of Ulquiorra that was shown in episode 137, when he spoke to Aizen at the end, he sounded like a little kid. They totally need new people to do the voice overs for Bleach, cause those voices are horrible.

Oh, also, the 3 BEST battles of Renji that I truly loved are 1. His battle with Ichigo, 2. His battle with Byakuya, and 3. His combined battle with Ishida vs Sayzel in that room, especially with Renji and Sayzel all wrapped up together as Renji blasted Sayzel and hurt himself as well. He's one tough fighter even if it causes him much more pain and suffering, he'll do what ever it takes to accomplish what needs to be done. But sadly, in all 3 of those battles, he lost, totally lost, which saddens me. But, I still loved those 3 battles, and I think I've still got the Sayzel battle saved on my computer too cause it was so awesome :bigsmile:.

DAMM, I think I've just seen one of the Bleach films, just the recent one Fade to Black I think it was called, and I loved how he sided with Ichigo, he looked so awesome, and didnt care what any captain said to him, didnt care about anyone, he trusted his gut, not his mind, but his gut. I loved when he sided with Ichigo and when he started remembering Rukia as well. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates the dubs. But Renji's totally one awesome badass, he came from a very rough life, living off the streets, stealing just for food to survive, so, he's a toughie. He'll never backdown ever in a fight. That's what makes him so great :bigsmile:

You should watch the second one (Diamond Dust Rebellion). The way Renji 'ressusitates' Ichigo by punching him still cracks me up. :bigsmile:

As to the dub: Renji has got one of the worst voices in it, and they completely ruined his characterisation in the scene between him and Rukia when Rukia is in the 6th division cell. (For starters there is no way Renji would ever say 'at ease' >_> ).

I hate Renji's Dub voice too, but i may just hate the dub because it seems wrong to hear them speaking English for once.... I loved Renji's part in FTB, It was almost like soul society, Renji was one of the first people to be on Ichigo's side.

you´re right, they are both not ready to be a captain yet. It´s not that you get to be a captain only because you have Bankai, you also need the stenght and will to lead a whole division and also you have to have good knowlage in all Shinigami skills, I think Kidou is important for a captain, altought many of them haven´t used Kidou yet. To say, Renji is really near to get the position of a captain, i think he only needs more experience.

Renji definitely needs more experience with his bankai first. At the moment the only reason I could see him changing division is if one ends up without a Captain or a Lieutenant, meaning they'd need someone high up to lead the division. But that wouldn't mean he would be a Captain, that would just put him in the same position as Shuuhei and Kira. (Though Renji having bankai does put him slightly ahead in the chances of getting a captaincy, especially after the war is over).

I believe Renji is not ready to take a captain's position yet. He needs more experience and he needs to train more with kido. You have to also remember the time line in manga too.This fighting takes place around 2 or 3 months after SS. Renji still needs more practice and have to remember Byakuya is older than he is so he has a lot more experience. He will match him in skill as time passes. Shunsui said Toshiro would pass him in strength in a hundred years or so.(using that as example)

i think its hard to say whether renji will surpass byakuya. renji and byakuya have very different fighting styles.

byakuya is very proficient all-around from shunpo to kidou to the actual battle skills. renji is more a powerhouse and strength. i think he could become stronger than byakuya in the literal sense, but i doubt he would ever be able to surpass his kidou skills and the like.

so, yeah, i think in the end they could be about 'equal' though in different areas. it would make for an interesting fight since they use a lot of different tactics.

I'd love seeing Renji become captain and even surpass Byakuya. It's gonna take Renji a hell of alot of work to surpass Byakuya, but, like sunshinelagoon said, they both use such different fighting styles, so, if Renji would just use his brains more, and also, get better with his bankai, then I think he could beat Byakuya. But Byakuya's no fool, his bankai is absolutely devastating so Renji would HAVE to plan ahead for that and try to find a way to just live thru that horror of Byakuya's bankai. But hell yes, I'd love seeing him captain and I truly think that he will become a captain.

Right but Kenpachi can back up his shit talk, even though he's not formally training (he just sleeps all the time..) he proves why the Gotei has that third method of becoming Captain, by beating the previous one.

If not for Aizen's death and the other little civil war going on in the backdrop of the Seireitei, Renji using the third method seems like exactly how he might become Captain. Beating Byakuya in front of the entire 6th Division and proving how much stronger he is would be his best bet (currently).

But of course given current circumstances that probably wouldn't happen.

Uhm in response to the previous topic i'd like to add that Renji would make a great captain and i'm sure that's about to happen pretty soon. He's strong, he helped a lot and he's just pure awsomness <3. However i really don't see him beating Byakuya anytime now to be honest.

So which division would you guys think that Renji would mostly fit in as a captain? And who would be most suited as vice captain for him?

I don't think I can see Renji as a captain at all at this point in time. He's reckless, he disobeys direct orders, and we haven't actually seen a lot of leadership potential. The Gotei 13 is supposed to be akin to a military organization and a military organization would see someone like that as a liability, not as the next great leader.

It's a bit more likely that he and Rukia would be punished for their actions, and punished severely.

...but let's face it, Bleach and KT are becoming increasingly nonsensical.

I'm the co-owner, and I'm not carrying a banner (answer = no, you don't have to have one).

You fail to see my point. Renji's already in a position of authority, but he doesn't act much like a leader. Basically, he acts according to what he thinks is right and he doesn't care about anything/anyone else; not the the Gotei 13, not for his captain, not even for his subordinates.

It's an admirable indivdual trait, but it's something that if not kept in check would see those who follow him get killed.

The fact that he's even more reckless when things turn chaotic is worse still! Would you want to be in a leaderless squad in times of crisis, because chances are he'd ditch his squad and responsibilities in favor of following Rukia (who'd be following Ichigo).

tl;dr: While I think Renji's a great character, I do not think he makes a good leader at this point in time.

EDIT: Oh, and I happen to be a big fan of Mayuri. His code of ethics are questionable at the best of times, but at least he has never failed to fulfill his duties (his lust for knowledge is too strong to do otherwise).

Also, 'perfect' is a terrible word. Have you not seen/read Mayuri's rant on perfection? :tongue:

And i actually saw your point, just Renji doesn't seem the type that would 'ditch' anyone just for Rukia, imo. Let's not forget that he beat the crap out of Rukia and Ichigo-before byakuya finishes him off anyway- when he had to take her back to SS. He obeys to the rules and he respects his taicho, only thing is that he puts the truth and his friends above the rules, in few situations that's it. He's not a rebel. Maybe he doesn't have the experience to be as good captain as the rest of them, true.
However i do believe that by being captain he will def learn to be more mature in his decisions. And he'd make the most protective captain ever <3 He'd never ditch his subordinates, especially his fukutaicho, imo.

Think for a second. You're using one instance where he follows the rules (and he eventually goes against them there too!) against the god-knows-how-many-times he's gone against them (both canonically and otherwise). It's more than a "few" situations. We're looking at an at least 80% abdication rate. I'd call that a rebel.

The comment about him never leaving his squad would hold true... only if said squad contains Rukia. He's totally whipped in that respect.

Renji's problem is also his strength. His affection for Rukia gave rise to the desire to beat Byakuya, and all he did was change around Divisions until he landed in the 6th, and he was only made a Vice-Captain recently; some time just before Rukia went to the real world. But as he told Byakuya, he doesn't want his Captain to disappear, otherwise he'd lose his motivation for getting stronger, so in that regard he's gained a lot of respect for Byakuya.

Rukia is still his focus, but I would say he's content in the subordinate category as it allows him more time with her (I'm not explicitly implying anything toward romance, though I think that's also a part of it), all this to say, Captain is one thing he doesn't want. He sees other people as strong, he views himself as weak. He needs to recognize his own strength so he can get to the point where he's not just talking himself up (to cover for his weakness)
