Damn, ya'll make me feel stupid.

Do you think there are certain things that just make languages easier for some people? I mean, I've even taken Spanish for 3 years now and still find it terribly hard to hold a conversation. What makes it so easy for some of you who seem to know four different languages?

It depends on the person, like some people are good at art, language is a thing you can have an affinity for. My little cousin she's 9 and she can speak Malay, French, Arabic and English fluently. She's originally malaysian living on oman now.
and Tolkien knew 30 languages by the time he died.

Moderate German (Enough to get by). Still learning, however.

I can understand Spanish, Italian, and Dutch, but can't converse in it since I don't actually know any words. The reason for this is that many of the words in the three languages are very similar to words in other languages I know.

lol at people who have put Japanese because they watch anime... knowing how to say "hello" or "you bastard" or "i will not die until i avenge you" doesn't mean you know a language; at all.

I'm learning German but REALLY suck at it... but then again i've only been learning for a month.

If you're from England, you're basically taught that you need to know 1 language in life, and that's English, I'm 19, and can't name anyone from my school who is fluent in another language. It's really bad. I travel loads and the most frustrating thing ever is knowing everyone around you knows exactly what you're saying but you haven't got a clue what they're saying!!!

Yeah, I went to the netherlands a few times (my dad took a lot of business trips and occasionally I'd go with him. I can't believe the company let him get away with it, but it worked out pretty well) so I sort of picked up a bit Dutch there, as well as German since in parts of the country there were sizable numbers of germans (there wasn't a lot to do while he was at work, so I listened to a bunch of dutch and german language tapes). Spanish I learned from a young age, and when I was younger I was rather obsessed with Brazil, so I also tried to learn portugese (though I'm not quite as good at it as with spanish). I learned French in High School. I'm thinking of trying to learn another language, but I should probably try to finish mastering the other languages first. If I do end up learning another one, it will probably either be Arabic or Japanese (since all the other languages I know are European, these would probably be more difficult for me, but I'm hopeful I'll manage to at some point).

I know a bit of French, but I did want to learn it. It only takes me a short time to grasp a language and learn meanings, sentence structure, definitions, grammar rules, et cetera in just a few months. That maybe due to me putting more time in it and doing research, but it greatly helps me. How much German do you know?

How much German do you know?
If your asking me, Mentalist, really not very much. I had about a year of in it 3rd grade though some after school program. I still have my notes, somewhere, and I'm amazed how much I remember from so long ago.
You are lucky you can pick up languages so easily. I am horrible at it. Here's my sob story:

Started Spanish in 4th grade. 7th grade they placed me in the advanced class. 8th grade they changed their minds and put me back in regular and I was bored out of my skull. Decided to take Russian in high school. They only offered 3 years so when I got to uni I didn't have the 4yrs of high school language to get out of the uni's requirement. They tested me, placed me in 3rd semester, of which I couldn't understand a single thing the teacher said so they switched me to 2nd semester (sound familiar?). I gave up after that and wound up taking Latin because since it's a "dead" language. I made it through the 4 required semesters, retained none of it and learned nothing of grammar or sentence structure. Now I'm slowly learning Japanese on my own. It goes very slowly but I'm enjoying it.

Fluently? Only English.
I'd like to learn Latin and Gaelic though. Japanese is working its way onto the list, too. I took two years of French in high school, but that won't get me really anywhere. My uni's foreign language department sucks. Some people took five years of a language before coming here and failed the lowest level class.

Just English fluently, but I can understand quite a bit of French as long as I have a dictionary for the occasional words that pass me by. (I got a C on the higher paper at GCSE but hell if I can remember very much of it now lol).

Oh and I know about five words in German. (Which I did for a grand total of 3 days in Junior School).

That saying from my previous post is the only sentence I know from Hungarian, but I wish to learn Hungarian one day- Lengyel, magyar – két jó barát, after all (Stiepan Batory from Hungary was one of the best kings who ruled Poland). I bet Polish would be hard to understand for you as Hungarian for me.

My cousin from USA have also Polish parents, but surprisingly he speaks Polish fluently and without accent. If you're not speaking Polish all the time, then I'm not surprised that you can't speak very fluently. Maybe if you would stay in Poland for few months you'll improve your skill.

I want to study English, so I hope I will go to America or UK in order to improve my spoken English.

My language list:

German (very poor)

French (I was not bad in it, but I almost forgot it. I need to refresh it)
Latin (some sentences)
Spanish (some sentences)
Russian (I can't read and write it, but I understand Russian people quite well)

Ran across someone on the base today, blew my mind. He speaks English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Polish, Swahili, Farsi, Turkish, Hindi, and Punjabi.

Goddamn.

I still speak the same crap as last time; English and French fluently, German capably but with noted difficulty, and every other Romantic/Germanic language I can understand when people talk to me, but since I don't know the exact words, I can't talk back to them (Save for in French, which just leaves them in the same position as me).

English + a little bit of Japanese and Spanish. Ironically, I didn't get into anime and manga until after I started my Japanese class. My school had just introduced Japanese as a new class. There was a neat little ad for it in the school catalog, and I still needed to take a semester of foreign language, so I decided to go with Japanese. As for Spanish, you're almost required to know some when you live in Southern California. :P

I'm hoping to become fluent in more then just one language, but they haven't added any more Japanese classes at my school. ._. Just the one beginning class.
