Mental Hurdle 3: Infinity

Posted 04-27-2008 at 04:56 PM by DK
How big is infinity?
Ok, obviously Infinity is infinite, since thats what it is and all, but did you ever think that there could be different sizes of infinity?

Ok think of the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... ∞
They never end. An infinite number of numbers

Now think 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 up to ∞
Thats twice as many numbers going into infinity as just the whole numbers.

Essentially its an infinite number of numbers which has twice as many as the infinite number of whole numbers.
As always you can apply this to every fraction there is, which just so happens to be infinite, so in the end you get an Infinite number of Infinite numbers of numbers in an infinite scope, which itself can be any of infinite sequences.

This is why I never liked math

Yup.
This is also why I sucked at math and the only class in school I actually had to pay attention or just downright fail it big time.

It's just filled with flaws and annoying backstabbing formulas

The numbers shown there are not so much the "numbers" in infinite, but rather the rate at which a system of numbers will reach infinite.

infinity is beyond comprehension, what youve shown us is nothing

No no the focus is on the amount of numbers in the sequence, not the sequence its going up in. As in theres an infinite number of whole numbers, but theres also an infinite number of fractions that can make up each of those numbers;
Kind of like saying theres 6billion people on the planet, but each of those are made of trillions of cells, each of them are made of billions of atoms etc.

And what exactly have you brought to the table? It never will hurt us to try to understand what lies beyond the visible.

And the watered down version of this blog would be:
There's no limit of numbers (?)

You realise that infinity isn't an actual number right?

You cannot say how many numbers it would take to get to infinity. It's impossible.

At what point do you say "Right, we've reached infinity. How many numbers have we said?"? There is no point at which you can say that as infinity is a term used to say that something is unlimited.

How can something be "an infinite number of numbers which has twice as many as the infinite number of whole numbers" when the term infinite takes all of these into account anyway?

infinity = 1/0, so yeah it isn't a tangible number.... an example of proper usage of infinite is usually in relative terms, such as 1,000,000 is essentially infinite relative to numbers such as 1.0, 1.5, 2, etc. (think population genetics)

I'm posting on this old blog because it is math-related and I'm all about math.

It's interesting, there are actually different levels of infinity. For example, there are an infinite number of integers, and an infinite number of rational numbers, but it can be shown that there are the same number of integers as rationals. However, there are more real numbers than integers.
