Internet discussion part 2: The Web as a tool to improve society

Posted 12-06-2008 at 09:29 PM by Aidan
Please read my last blog about the Internet first.

This blog will hit a couple issues: concerns about my idea laid out in the last blog, and my ideas for how the Internet can be used as a tool for good.
Anyway...

So some of you might raise the question, gee, your idea sounds kind of like having Communism on the Internet. Well, kind of. But it's way more complicated than that. And I want to emphasize that this has nothing to do with the "forced reallocation", "whoop de doo workers" or any of the bullshit from "Communist" countries of the 20th century, all of which are more realistically described as socialist dictatorships/oligarchies. BUT I really don't want to get into politics/history.

What I'm saying is I want a feeling on the Internet of true community, of "I watch out for you and you watch out for me," of "we're all in the same community, therefore I'll treat you with respect." Most people are good when they're interacting with someone face-to-face, or at least when interacting with someone they know. So if you can put a face or name to everyone you communicate with online, you're more likely to think of that person as a fellow human instead of a bunch of text on a website, and thus treat them better.

I believe that the Internet is a good way to connect people and that this connection can be positive and synergistic. Therefore I think we should strive to get as many people interconnected as possible. Now of course I don't want everyone on computers all the time, that's not a good idea either. But I think everyone should have equal access, equal ability to communicate with whoever they want. This can maximize the connections people feel between each other, and I think the more we can get people to interact with each other in positive ways, the more people will see others as fellow human beings just as deserving of respect and love as their own relatives and friends, and this should hopefully have an impact on the amount of violence and negativity.

Of course, there are other networks: social networks of people knowing each other in real life, other sorts of electronic networks, as well as networks such as neighborhoods, schools, and other communities. I hope that through the example of the internet, which right now has a mixed reputation, we can set an example of positive interaction that could really make a difference in the world as all these networks work in tandem.

So is you're point that there should be a community within the internet that are a virtual utopian society or that the whole internet should be encouraged to be?

Follow Up

Spoiler:
That is a good follow up to your “part 1” blog.

However, again you want to solve world hunger. The idea of a more humane interaction via internet is a moot point. To think that the world today operates on “sex, lies and video tapes” (with the occasion of money being involved), you’re looking at shaping a world that does not like change to begin with.

The mind set of each individual would need to be so strong, so intellectual, and so open minded for your “ideal” communication to even take place. Most people would just move on to the next topic in discussion.

The idea to have a die with 40 sides sounds "awesome" or "cool". Who really wants to sit there and think up the logic for it? The answer is simple...

Well, I want to address this later in full, but I completely acknowledge the difficulty of effecting any large-scale change in the Internet, in how people think. It comes down to asking society to do a complete paradigm shift from a selfish, entertainment-based paradigm to a paradigm of acting on our morals, thinking carefully about the consequences of our actions, making good decisions, and understanding the benefits of interdependence.

But of course any sort of paradigm change is nigh-on impossible. It is practically human nature to resist change that seems like it could be uncomfortable. I know, because I am trying to change myself at the moment to be a better, more effective person. I am having a hard time myself, so I don't expect to be able to do this on any larger scale.

My goal for now is simply to see if anyone else is interested in voluntarily trying to raise the standards of their own interaction on the Internet, and from there, if possible, spread the idea. Once I know whether this ends up being a remotely popular idea, then I can start worrying about how to "spread the faith" or "change the world." But I think my idea just might have promise. The internet is a surprisingly powerful force, and it has the ability to shape society.

Well, I mean, Obama's good at making people feel hopeful about things, so if you want, go right ahead.
