VINLAND SAGA
Vinland Saga is one of the most well written and drawn manga I’ve cross path with. I am not that great with mangas, but damn this one is really good. Since 2005, it has moved from a weekly shounen release a monthly release. Yukimaru Makoto has given birth to a very good historical illustration to all readers.
The story is set around in the year ~1000 BC and revolves around few but well connected characters, thanks to a great deal of plot and story-twist; such as Thorfinn, Askeladd and Canut. In the Viking era, what is now Great Britain is under siege and constantly threatened by sea-neighboring countries like Iceland, Norway and biggest and most notorious of them all Denmark. Danes have a reputation for their brave battles, tremendous strength in both wars and patience. The protagonist of the story is somewhat clouded by his rage and revenge he seeks from his father’s enemy, who also happens to lead the very lot he goes with. Young lad’s name is Thorfinn, son of Thors. His father was once a legendary general in the past time. On a mission to save the villagers, Thors run into mercenaries, led by Askeladd and dies in an uneven duel. From there he swore to kill the very man by his own hand, but is often delayed or re-challenged to have a battle with him. Things will get pretty interesting and very surprising as it continues from there… With formidable battle scenes, realistic dramas and no space for much humor this one is not for everyone. However, it is truly a gold nugget to who seek good old fashion sword massacring via Viking-style.
So far, the story and amazing art work sparked my thirst for more and I would recommend this to readers who seek a good manga with an unusual flavor mixed with gore, blood and lots of battles. Especially for Viking themed thrill seekers. The series isn’t done, yet. But the majority of the story is well played out in my opinion. It has been a pleasure reading up to this point and thanks to Anomandaris, Greg770 for recommending such great work. Hail!
