Disney needs to GTFO.

Posted 10-21-2009 at 10:04 AM by Wras
Alright when I heard about the Disney-Marvel merger, at first I was kind of disappointed. This was a big deal and meant a lot of changes for Marvel, but the more I read I came to understand it could be, and probably will be, a very good thing for many of Marvel's goals. Some things will be changed, probably forever, but the comics haven't been that good in years/decades/a while anyway save for the occasional obvious exception; I can live with that.

I can live with Disney's presence in the world, but now I've stumbled upon this:

Spoiler:

Now, this is just fanart, right? Sure, harmless fun, but I don't think the artist realizes just how dangerous this little piece of artwork is lol.

For example:

Spoiler:

These, however, are completely real. Do you want a Donald Duck Darth Maul? Probably not. A Stitch Yoda? No. It's funny for a few seconds at the most, to entertain the idea, but Disney is being serious here.

The above are simple $10 figurines, but there are limited edition Mickey Skywalker figures, a foot high, for over one hundred dollars.

Is Disney going to stop? Probably not, and this is just an insignificant rant, but it gives you an idea of what may be to come. I won't go into detail about, but will mention, the ridiculous rise in popularity about the bumbling speech impediment duck and the retarded dog thanks to the Kingdom Hearts series. "Disney Fantasy VII" isn't even kind of funny, because Disney already has a strong presence in the FF-verse.

Although I will say Goofy and Max being Jecht and Tidus did make me lol.

Don't see any reason to moan at some (pretty clever, if short-lived) marketing ideas if they don't change the COMIC at all. I mean if you didn't buy Spider-Man figurines why would you even entertain the idea of buying a Spider-Goofy or whatever.

I don't really buy Spider-man figurines, but the Disney label is going to change Marvel's face, here and there. And I don't see what a $120 Mickey Mouse as Han Solo action figure has to do with being clever.

Mainly I'm just groaning in the general direction of Disney Star Wars, the Disney half of the Kingdom Hearts series, and the possible drawbacks of the Marvel-Disney merger buyout.

I wonder if they'll censor blood and guts from the comics. That would not be cool man...

I don't know how this will affect currently running comics but I doubt there will be a sudden drastic change in titles such as Ultimate Spider-man, but Spider-man has never been particularly bloody to begin with.

I'm assuming Disney will just stick with what they do best in terms of demographic and it will now be easier to market Marvel's products to children, but I still am weary of what may happen.

I said it was clever 'cuz it attracts three demographics. They also probably only cost a fraction of the price to make so major profit.

I don't think Disney are dumb enough to fuck with Marvel's actual team. They own the company, so they get the money, they get licensing, they get marketing (which they are probably better at anyway) but they have probably realized they don't wanna fuck with something that already makes money.

Hopefully.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if they started sanitising Marvel new releases to satisfy the bible belt folks who would probably try to call a boycott of Disney shit in protest of Marvel's perceived deviance.

^^Oh, God no...

The merger has it's pros and cons. I wonder if this whole deal could somehow lead to a Disney inspired equivalent to the Marvel Zombies series? lol...

Kingdome Hearts is an amazing game though.
Even though I can't stand Disney going everywhere, for example see this horror: http://www.geekologie.com/2009/01/16/optimus-mouse.jpg

Seriously? Yes. Seriously.

I agree with the last two sentiments.

Though it wouldn't be great if it was a comic. If I had a coic of a bunch of FF and Disney characters interacting I would be turned away instantly. It works 'cuz it's a game. I doubt a similar merging of stories could happen with Marvel.

Kingdom hearts got extraordinarily lucky, really. They took a gamble and a lot of things could have gone wrong but didn't. This seems like a series of similar gambles.
