The problem isn't so much Islam itself, it's the circumstances around the regions the religion is practiced in. I'm not really an apologist for Islam, but I live in a state with a large Muslim population and I hate to see my friends and neighbors stereotyped. Islam is really no different from other religions: people pick and choose what they want to believe. If a muslim wants to be peaceful, they'll view the Quran as explicitly forbidding murder and Jihad as a spiritual struggle rather than a literal 'holy war'; if a muslim wants to commit violence, they'll interperet it as advocating the killing of infidels. Islam is really more justification for violence in the minds of extremists rather than the root cause of the violence itself.

Islam is certainly no 'religion of peace' but neither is it inherently more violent than other religions. It's a matter of who the followers are, and right now it's been grabbed onto by a bunch of crazies. Using the actions of extremists to justify harassment of common muslims in modern countries is counterproductive and pointless. Sure we should keep an eye on it, but it's important that we keep in mind that the enemy is the extreme fundamentalist Muslims, and not Islam as a whole.

If christians were raised in war torn desert areas with no tv and cable theyd be pissed off too. Shit if all christians and muslims just instantaneously switched places? The chrisitians would show the muslims a thing or two about how to really do a jihad. LOL

though he was probably conflicted man partly because he felt he was betraying muslims in afghanistan/iraq and yet at the same time betraying the country he serves if he leaves or expresses discontent on the war...

but this still doesn't make it acceptable that he went on a sniping spree...

this is me guessing what he went through since a lot young Muslims born here in the UK feel confused about their nationality and who they are here since their has been a lot of backlash.
