Quote:
110 YEARS EARLIER
A troubled fourth seat named Hisako Manataki dashed down Squad One's barracks, desperately trying to find the captain's meeting room. She heard about the accident regarding the captains and lieutenants who were somehow changed into hollows. The report still hadn't stated which captain's and lieutenants were involved, and her heart was aching with worry. The Squad Eight member turned down every corridor until she saw the large symbol 'one' on large double doors. She pumped her legs harder, and she saw some figures walking down the hall, opposite from her. Hisako couldn't tell who is was at first, but happy tears came to her eyes when the pink haori stood out on one of the figures. Her energy suddenly refilled, "Captain Kyoraku! Captain Kyoraku!" she called, getting closer to him. He glanced up and smiled at her, but it was a sad smile. A tear went down her cheek as she collided in his arms, "Captain Kyoraku! I thought you had been one of the captains that was turned into a hollow! I was so worried!" he wrapped his arms around her in a comforting hug. She had always been a dedicated subordinate, and was the only one who didn't hit him with something when he complemented her beauty. His friend Captain Ukitake smiled at the young fourth seat as she held on tighter to her captain.
"I'm sorry I worried you Hisako. But, there is bad news." she let go of him and glanced up, seeing his sad face, "It seems that our Lieutenant Lisa was one of the casualties." Hisako's hand flew to cover her mouth as she gasped, shaking her head as she didn't believe what she just heard.
"No! It can't be true! I just saw her yesterday! There's no way she could have been there!" Captain Kyoraku nodded, sadly looking to the ground.
"It is my fault. She went instead of me last night. She was listening in on the captain's meeting last night and offered to go, and I let her. If I hadn't, maybe she would still be our lieutenant." Captain Ukitake put a hand on the man's shoulder.
"It wasn't your fault. You didn't know what would happen. Nobody did." Captain Kyoraku nodded. Hisako wiped her cheeks dry.
"This just... doesn't make sense. Who could have done this? Lieutenant Lisa... What's little Nanao going to think? Lieutenant Lisa would read to her every week! This can't be happening! Things like this just don't happen to the 13 Court Guard Squads!" she leaned against the wall, breathing deeply with wide purple eyes. Captain Kyoraku was by her side, holding her shoulders.
"You need to calm down Hisako. You'll have a panic attack." she looked up at him.
"What do you think is happening right now?" she asked, holding her hand over her chest as she heaved air in and out of her lungs, "I loose one of my best friends because of an unknown reason and you're telling me to calm down? You know me well enough to know what I do when I'm shocked!" she sank to her knees, breathing deeply to restore her normal breathing tempo.
"I know, I know. Right now you just need to wait for the report just like the rest of us. It should be coming in soon. I'll tell you as soon as I am authorized to do so. Until then, why don't you go rest? This has been a hard two days for all of us." she nodded slowly... reluctantly... before listening and trying to walk away. But she couldn't. She loved her captain deeply... not in the romantic way, but he was her role model. And she didn't want to leave his side now that something was on the loose that could turn soul reapers as powerful as captains into hollows. She had known the man since she entered the academy, and trained every day in hopes of joining his squad. And now that she was, as his fourth seat, she wanted to keep the vow she made to protect him, no matter what. So she turned back to him, a fist over her heart.
"If... If I'm quiet, can I please join you in the captain's meeting as Lieutenant Lisa's stand in? Isn't that allowed in cases like this?" he was silent for a few seconds, pondering the thought until she grasped his haori sleeve and put her forehead on his shoulder, "Please. You're like a father to me captain. I don't want to lose someone who is like family to me. Not after I lost my mother." her knuckles were turning white from her harsh grip on his haori, "I'll stay in the back and will be quiet, I promise. I just, don't want to leave your side. I want to keep the vow I made upon entering the 13 Court Guard Squads as your fourth seat. I'm begging you." she whispered, her eyes slightly open, almost fully closed. A warm hand rubbed her back as her captain brought her into another light hug. Captain Ukitake gave a friendly wink to his friend, along with a slight chuckle.
"You'd better let her Shunsui. Being the stubborn woman she is, I'd say she'd follow you even if you told her to go away." Hisako nodded, not lifting her features from his chest. He was too comfortably warm. She didn't know why all the other women detested him for complementing them. To her he was like a giant teddy bear who liked to hug and tell women how pretty they were. Although sometimes he was drunk and would flirt with them, but still, to Hisako he was a great man, and gave him the respect he deserved as a captain.
Captain Kyoraku nodded, patting the troubled girl on the head, "Alright. You can fill in Lieutenant Lisa's spot at the meeting for today." she smiled, hugging him around his neck.
"Thank you so much captain!" as she promised, she was silent as she followed them into the meeting room. There, she saw that four captains and three lieutenants were missing from the group, as well as Captain Urahara. Hisako also took not that the captain and lieutenant of the kidou corps. were missing as well.
"This is bad." Captain Kyoraku quietly whispered. Captain Ukitake nodded in agreement. They all took their places in the lines, Hisako standing right behind her captain, her hands behind her back. The head captain walked in and sat down at the head of the room.
"This meeting shall now come to order. As of last night, Squad Two's team have told us the list of captains and lieutenants. They are: Captain Love, Captain Muguruma, Captain Shinji, Captain Rose, Lieutenant Mashiro, Lieutenant Lisa, and Lieutenant Hiyori, and the lieutenant of the kidou corps. Hatachi. Also, they discovered Captain Urahara at the site of the incident. He has been taken into custody along with Captain Tessai of the kidou corps, in beliefs that Captain Urahara was the cause of this accident. Tessai has been taken into custody for performing forbidden kidou without permission, and the captains and lieutenants were found this morning in Urahara's lab, hollow masks on their faces. They will be dealt with by execution." a silent gasp came from the covered mouth of Hisako. Tears, so many hot tears wanted to fall from her eyes. All these captains and lieutenants... There was no way Captain Urahara did this! Captain Urahara was loved by everyone! There was no way he could have betrayed them! "As of tomorrow, the Central 46 has declared that Captain Urahara and Captain Tessai will be stripped of their reatsu and will be banished to live out the remainder of twit lives in the World of the Living. Tomorrow is when the prisoners will be punished and when the execution will take place. Captain Shihoin, you have your punishment team sorted out to carry out the punishments and executions?" Captain Shihoin's tanned hands were balled into fists. She slowly nodded.
"Yes sir." she answered, sadness enveloping her for having to take away her childhood friend's soul reaper powers away from him. For Hisako, this was too much to bear. The second the Head Captain's staff hit the floor in dismissal, she bolted out, allowing her tears to finally fall.
60 YEARS LATER
Order had seemed to fall back into reality in the would of Sereitei. New captains had been placed, as well as new lieutenants. Ever since Captain Shihoin broke Captain Urahara and Captain Tessai out of the Central 46 chambers, they had been in hiding for the past 60 years or so. The other captains and lieutenants who were caught in that accident vanished as well, probably also due to Urahara and Shihoin when they escaped. Hisako, now a third seat, was walking down a hallway through Squad Eight's barracks, humming a light tune, when someone covered her eyes, "Guess who." she giggled, reaching behind her. "I give up." the mystery person turned her around and her eyes went wide.
"Yumichika?" she gasped, looking at him in his new kimono, "You're a soul reaper now?" he nodded, "Oh! That's great!" she jumped at him and hugged him. It was not a secret anymore about their relationship, so she wasn't embarrassed to show her affections towards him as she quickly pecked him on the lips.
"What's all this squealing I'm hearing out here?" Captain Kyoraku walked out from his office, soon to get a hug from Hisako as well.
"Good morning Captain Kyoraku! How are you on this new spring morning?" he shrugged.
"Good I guess. I haven't had a good drink yet today, so come back when I have." they both chuckled, "Come on, let's go eat something." with a nod, the couple followed Captain Kyoraku to his favorite restaurant.
On the other side of Sereitei, things weren't as bubbly. In fact, it was quite gloomy. Deep in the Kuchiki household, a husband was holding his lover's hand as she slowly passed away. Byakuya wanted to be strong, for her, but seeing her in this state literally ripped his heart in two. Five years, five damn years was all the time he was given to be with Hisana. Now she was slipping away, and there was nothing he could do. His heart felt heavy, his world was crashing down on him. He did everything for her, to make her his, and all karma gave him was five years. He was kneeling by her side, her hand in his as she told him what a burden she was to him. He just shook his head, denying that statement. When did she think she was a burden to him? She was his everything. He purposefully skipped work on some nights just to be in her presence. He loved her with such a passion, every minute with her was like an early heaven to him. She completed him, she made him loosen up, forget he was a noble even. If she asked him, he would drop anything he was doing just to be by her side. And now, now that was ending. Her frail body was failing as she laid there, begging Byakuya to find her sister Rukia. With a sigh of his name, she was gone. Her hand went limp in his.
Byakuya bowed his head, a tear dropping from his closed eyes. His entire body trembled, her hand growing cold in his. He cupped her cheek in his hand, "Hisana. Please, no. Don't go." he pleaded. His grip on her hand tightening. An arm slipped under her neck and the other under her knees as he pulled her limp body to him. Her head rested on his shoulder as he held her to him. His other arm was around her waist, holding her in his lap while the tears fell silently. He buried his head in her raven black locks. She smelled of cherry blossoms. A hand ran through her hair, his tears staining his pale ivory cheeks. He pressed his forehead to hers... How cold she had become in those few minutes. What did he do to deserve this? Was it something he had done as a child? What had he done that was so bad, that karma had to take away his world, his everything, his lover? Why did they have to take away the only one who saw him not as a noble, but as a man? He wanted to hear her voice again, see those eyes, her smile, anything that would give him a glimpse of her. His eyes slowly reopened, his mouth barely parting to say one simple sentence, "I will never love again."

And so is your blade.
Byakuya stood in the Kuchiki House, his demeanor calm and collected as usual. He looked out of the window, as the late afternoon sun was just starting to set, the sun shining through the open window. His gaze which was momentarily on the sun shifted to the lawn. A sudden memory flooded into his mind, his eyes closed, allowing it to take control.
Little Byakuya! Little Byakuya! Over here!
Byakuya looked over at Yoruichi as she called to him, his look still as stoic as always, as he shunpoed over to her, to try to catch him.
She appeared behind him and tapped his shoulder with a giggle, Little Byakuya, you lost again!
I did not lose, Yoruichi. It is an ongoing battle that will never finish.
She laughed again, At least not until you win, right? She pat the top of his head, ruffling his black hair.
Byakuya grumbled, taking hold of her hand, removing it from atop his head, That is not what I said, Yoruichi.
You just cant admit youre a sore loser. She poked the tip of his nose, then proceeded to run circles around him as he grumbled, denying that he was anything near of a sore loser.
Byakuyas normal stoic expression cracked a smile, remembering the times they use to play onigoto together on that lawn. He smiled for the first time in a long time. But that smile, that happiness was short lived. Byakuyas thoughts of his childhood were soon interrupted by a voice. It was Rikichi.
Kuchiki taichou!
Not wanting for anyone to see his faint smile, he quickly made it disappear before looking at him, What is it?
The ryokahave gone to Senzaikyuu.
I see.
Do you think theyd really plan to release Rukia from there, Kuchiki taichou?
That is none of your concern. He turned, walking away from him, heading out of the Kuchiki House.
Rikichi blinked, You know, for a second thereI swore I saw him smiling. He looked outside the same window that Byakuya had just been looking out of, But I dont see anything worth smiling about out there. He shrugged, heading out of the Kuchiki House himself.
A short while later, Ichigo had awoken and got teased as Yoruichi finally showed him her true form. But the lingering question in his mind still stood.
Why does someone like you have such an item? Youre able to heal woundsyou carry around these valuable itemsjust who are you, Yoruichi?
Wellyou see
Her sentence was cut short as they both felt the spiritual pressure from above. It was an all too familiar spiritual pressure for the both of them. Both of them instantaneously knew who it was. Kuchiki Byakuya.
Ichigo quickly took hold of the device, simply saying, Tobe! The singular, bat-like wing sprout from the device, the thin rope-like structure wrapping around his arm as he broke down the door and started to head toward Senzaikyuu.
Yoruichi grumbled, Baka she clinched her hands into fits, Dont you know that if you go up there, youll get yourself killed?! You wont be able to rescue anyone in your state.
She had no choice but to follow Ichigo. She walked back into their small hideout, gathering what little they happened to bring, tucking it away. She held a small, pill-shaped object in her hand, Guess I really do have no choice. Gomen nasaiIchigo.
Finally, Ichigo landed on the pathway of Senzaikyuu, making sure that Hanatarou was alright. He got into a spat with Rukia before finally concentrating on Byakuya. However, just as Byakuya was about to release the shi kai form of Senbonzakura, a cloth was wrapped around his blade, the familiar females face looking back at him with a slight smile. Hanatarou and Rukia were speaking with one another, trying to figure out who the woman was that had just appeared and stopped Byakuyas potential attack.
Its been awhile, hasnt it, Little Byakuya?
Shihouin Yoruichi, eh?
Byakuya temporarily got lost in his thoughts.
Its been so long since Ive heard that name, since Ive seen her face. All those years agohow I longed to hold her in my arms and call her my own. What was it that got in the way? Was it pride? Noshe left Soul SocietyI nevergot the chance. Then I swore thatif I ever found another that she would be the exact opposite of you. That wasHisana. And thenafter she passed on Ithe only one I could think of was you.
He sighed softly, The former commander of the Special Operations Unit, and Captain of the First Keigun BrigadeShihouin Yoruichi. I havent seen your face in awhile. It has been a hundred and four years since you disappeared. I thought you were dead.
To be quite honest, I was relieved that you were still aliveYoruichi. Another loss like thatwould simply be one that I could not bear to endure.
Ichigo spoke, interrupting their conversation, Yoruichi, you came to save me, right? Thank you, but please step aside so I can beat him.
Yoruichi looked at him sternly, Oh? Youre fighting him? Baka
Within the blink of an eye, Yoruichi was gone. Within the following moment, she was in front of Ichigo, her hand shoved within his abs, inserting the tranquilizer.
What the.Yoru
She removed her hand from him, catching his limp body as it fell forward toward her.
Ukitake, who had been watching from a distance blinked, You used some form of tranquilizer, didnt you? Yoruichiwhat do you plan on doing with him now?
Ukitake taichou
Byakuya interrupted, Everything you do is futile. You cannot escape.
Yoruichi smirked slightly, Oh? Since when did you start to talk big, Little Byakuya? Have you ever beaten me in a game of onigoto?
How strangely ironic it was that she would mention that and he, not all that long before that, had been lost in thought, remembering the times that they use to play together. How he missed those days, being able to see her all the time; being able to watch her smile and laugh, teasing him about how he lost. If it werent for the seriousness of the moment, he probably would be smiling again.
He spoke his words coldly, Shall we try again?
They began their game of onigoto, to them a battle of shunpo. She had always beaten him in the past. Though, there was a difference this time. She hadnt fought for over a hundred years while Byakuya, on the other hand, more than likely continued to train, becoming even stronger than before. It was a small fact that she was aware of. Just the same, she would try to beat him to the best of her ability.
Finally, Byakuya slashed upward with his sword with a sigh, Did you think you could escape with that level of shunpo?
It appeared that Yoruichi lost, her bloodied body falling backwards before it vanished, a few pieces of orange and black cloth falling to the ground. Byakuyas eyes widened for a moment and blinked as she was crouched on his arm, unharmed.
She smirked softly, Did you think that you could catch me with that level of shunpo?
Byakuya blinked, watching her disappear and stand atop one of the rooftops, as he looked up at her, sheathing his sword.
She looked down at him, Three days. In three days, I will make him stronger than you. Its a little selfish, but I will postpone the fight between the both of you until then. You may follow me if you want, howeverShunshin Yoruichi will not be caught so easily.
She vanished, shunpoing from rooftop to rooftop, fleeing from Senzaikyuu. She would have to explain the situation to Ichigo and knew it wouldnt go over well. Byakuya softly sighed, walking away himself.
Ukitake blinked, Oi, Byakuyaarent you going to capture the ryoka? Where are you going?
Ive lost interest. Do what you want with them.
Byakuya walked away and Ukitake sighed, rubbing the top of his head, He always does what he wants anyway.
The final battle between Byakuya and Ichigo was approaching. Byakuya knew he would probably have to fight with the ryoka. But something was missing. He could not do this alone. He had promises to keep, but on top of that, there was an item missing. He opened up a small wooden box with a soft interior, a single clip resting inside. It was a womans hairclip but whom it belonged to, only he and the other person knew. He tucked it into his robes, before heading off to fight with the Ichigo. It was silly for a man, especially one such as Byakuya to be carrying around such a clip. However, to Byakuya, it meant so much more.
The end of the battle drew near.

p; If we do not uphold the rules, then who will? Byakuya spoke calmly
If I were in your position, Id still fight the rules. replied Ichigo.
Byakuyas eyes widened slightly before he turned around. He pulled the clip from within his robes, smiling softly before he had realized one small thing. The hair clip was broken. This is your victory, Kurosaki Ichigo.
It was some time before Yoruichi and Byakuya met again. In fact, it was not until Aizen stood atop the hill and Yoruichi stood to stop him with Byakuya injured from Aizen trying to kill Rukia that they once again met. Though at the time, there was no time for the two of them to meet.
As Byakuya was healing, he sent Renji away, back to the squad office to check on things. He had to come up with some kind of plan to get Yoruichi alone so that they could talk one on one. He also was aware that she would be returning to the human world with Ichigo. He wasnt going to let her go back this time without her knowing how he felt, he wasnt going to allow pride or stubbornness to stand in his way. He looked out of his window and blinked as he happened to see her walking around.
It was at that time that he did something that was unlike him, Oi, Yoruichi.
She blinked and turned toward him, a casual grin on her face, Oi, Byakuya.
Come here for a moment.
She nodded, heading inside the building and up to his room, standing at his bedside, What is it, Byakuya?
What are you out there doing?
Ichigo was looking for Rukia, so I thought Id help. How are you feeling?
Im finebut Rukia is missing?
Dont worry your little head, Little Byakuya. Im sure Ichigo already found her.
I should look for her he said as he started pulling the blankets from his body.
Oi. You just lie there and get some rest. Your injuries havent healed completely yet. She placed the blankets back over his body and gently tried to lay him back so that he could rest.
He blinked, watching her, then smiled softly.
She blinked, Now theres a sight we dont see often. You should smile more, it looks good on you.
He shook his head, There is nothing to smile over, Yoruichi.
Gheez, Byakuya. Isnt there even one thing that you can smile about?
There is one thing he spoke softly.
She blinked, What was that?
He shook his head once more, Nothing.
Fine, fine keep it to yourself. She crossed her arms across her chest, Youre always so stuffy and you always keep things to yourself anyway.
Yoruichi
Hai, Byakuya?
Youre heading back with Ichigo and the others, arent you?
Not until tomorrow, why do you ask?
You are not required to go with him and to help see him off. They can go alone or we can have someone else see them off.
I should return to the Urahara Shoten anyway.
You should not have gone the first time.
I had my reasons for leaving Soul Society then, Byakuya.
Perhaps so, but you still should not have goneat least not without knowing
Without knowing what?
Please, sit down, Yoruichi. There is something that Ive needed to tell you for some time now.
She blinked, grabbing the chair that was against the wall and brought it to his bedside and sat down, Alright. What is it? It sounds important.
It is. He managed to sit himself up in bed as he looked over at her, taking her hand into his.
It was a long time since I had last felt the warmth of his hand in my own. Though, before it was different. That time, I took his hand into mine, not the other way around. It waswhen we were older
Yoruichi was walking outside, happening to pass by the Kuchiki House, her attendants surrounding her, one holding a parasol over her kimonoed form. She blinked, looking over, seeing a familiar face sitting outside the walls of the Kuchiki House, leaning against the walls looking rather upset. To anyone else, it wouldnt seem like anything out of the ordinary since that was how he always was, but she knew better.
She looked to her attendants, A moment, please. She parted from them and walked over to the man. She knelt down, as it was all that her kimono would allow, Konnichi wa, Little Byakuya.
He blinked, recognizing the voice, looking up at her, Konnichi wa, Yoruichi.
Why so gloom?
I am fine, Yoruichi.
Bakasave that for someone else who doesnt know you.
You shouldnt leave your attendants like that.
I dont care about them right now, thats why I came over to you. Now tell me whats the matter, Byakuya.
Training is difficult and he stopped himself, shaking his head, not wanting to expel any more of the details.
You dont have to live up to someone elses standards, Byakuya. You dont have to let them drive you and let them walk all over you. Do what you feel is right. You cant possibly live life trying to live up to someone elses expectations of you. Justtry your hardest and do your best. Never give up, Byakuya. If you become strong, do it for yourself, not for your familydo it for yourself.
He nodded slightly, Hai, Yoruichi.
She stood back up, holding her hand out to him, smiling, Everything will be alright, Little Byakuya.
But I
She shook her head, Everything will be alright.
He took her hand, using it to help him stand back up, Everything
She chuckled, nodding, Everything will be alright. She pulled the hairpin from her hair, letting her purple hair fall down to its normal length. She placed the hairpin into his hand and smiled, Just carry this with you. Whenever youre feeling down or that you cant succeeddraw strength from this and itll be like Im there with you, fighting with you, giving the strength that you need.
I dont think that I should be carrying a
Just carry it. And wear a smile more often and lighten up, people will like you better.
She went back to her attendants who were calling her, rushing her to hurry as they had somewhere to be.
He watched her leave and softly smiled, Draw strength from you he held onto the clip before tucking it away.
What is it, Byakuya?
He shook away the thoughts in his head, the words he really wanted to say to her, I am sorry.
For what?
When I was fighting with that boy, Kurosaki Ichigo he shook his head, not wanting to reveal his feelings.
Hm?
The hairclip you gave me all those years agoit got broken. I stepped on it accidentally.
Gah, youre worrying about a hairclip I gave you a long time ago? Dont worry about small things like that, just get better.
He kept her hand held in his own, once again trying to muster up the courage to say how he felt, but instead simply said, Everythingwill be alright.
She smiled at him, nodding, having remembered saying the exact same thing to him all those years ago, Everything will be alright.
The truth of the matter wasto Byakuya the breaking of the hairclip meant more than just a broken womans accessory. After all, she told him all those years ago to draw strength upon her from the clip she gave him, to draw strength from her. In a time when he needed strength the most and the clip got shattered. How could his fight continue on with Ichigo? And, more importantly, how then could he obtain the courage to tell her how he felt about her now?
Yoruichi
Hm?
Have a safe trip
You were always a terrible liar, Little Byakuya.
His eyes widened slightly, What?
You heard me. I know that you didnt just drag me over here, become all nervous and get lost in thought just to tell me about a broken hairclip and to have a nice trip. Now, if you have something on your mind, say it.
I have nothing that
Enough. She looked at him, The one who always knew you and your feelings best was me.
It isnt all that
Just say it. Or is it that you cant? she smirked softly
Foolishness. There is no way that I could not.
Oh? Then lets hear it.
It is irrelevant.
Bah! Just like I thought. Poor Little Byakuya is too weak. He cant even accomplish a simple task.
He clinched his hand into a fist, Insolence! There is no way that I could not!
Well? Im waiting.
You see, Yoruichiever since we were young I
His sentence got cut off as one of the nurses walked into the room, Kuchiki taichou, Im here tooh Im sorry I did not know you had company.
Byakuya looked at the woman, What did you come for?
I came here to change your bandages.
Yoruichi grumbled, That can wait. Byakuya, go on with what you were saying.
He shook his head lightly, If my wounds do not heal, then how will I be able to say anything at all?
You arent on the verge of dying. You have some wounds thatve already been healed for the most part. Just tell me.
There is nothing to tell.
She sighed, Fine. Enjoy your recovery. She stood, heading for the door.
No! he screamed inside. Dont go! I love you! he wanted to say to her, but couldnt. He wasnt the type that could express his feelings that way, if at all.
Yoruichi made her way out of the building and halfway across the courtyard.
Byakuya pushed the doors of the building open, panting softly from having run after her while still being injured, Yoruichi!
She blinked, turning around, Byakuya? She rushed over to him, Byakuya what are you doing out here? You should be inside.
I am sorry
For what? This isnt about the hairclip again is it?
I lied about that. It was broken butnot because I stepped on it. I took it with me when I went to fight Kurosaki Ichigo.
She blinked, Im amazed you still had that thing. But more importantlywhy would you bring it to battle with you?
Iwould not be strong enough on my own. You told me to draw strength from you through the hairclip. When I fought with that boyit was broken. I did not ever need strength, the way that I do now.
She looked at him worriedly, Whats wrong, Byakuya?
He shook his head as he looked into her eyes, his charcoal colored eyes meeting with her golden, yellow eyes, Nothing is wrong. Something is right. YoruichiI love youIve alwaysloved you. A smile formed on his lips. But it wasnt long lived as his body started to give, his body falling in her direction.
She grabbed him before he could fall completely, supporting him. Byakuyacan you hear me?
Hn was all that he could muster.
ByakuyaIvealways loved you too.
She helped him back inside and onto his bed, and, after his wounds were rebandaged, she placed a blanket over him to keep him warm. She sat at his bedside, waiting for him to wake up. More than anything else, she was curious if he even heard what she said or if he really meant what he said.
He woke up; the first thing his charcoal colored eyes saw was her, Yoruichi
Good to see you awake, Little Byakuya.
Must you call me that?
She chuckled softly, Hai hai.
Why do you call me that, anyway? Im taller than you
She wrinkled her nose, So are you feeling alright?
He sighed softly, once again she had dodged his question, I am fine Yoruichi.
You know, you came outside in a hurry and said
I am aware.
She blinked, looking at him, So thenyou remembered what
He slowly nodded, I would not forget something as trivial as that, Yoruichi. He softly took her hand into his, Shihouin YoruichiI lo
Before anything else could be spoken, the doors opened, the red-headed vice-captain walking back into the room, Kuchiki taich he blinked, Yoruichi
Byakuya quickly withdrew his hand, looking at him, What is it, Renji?
He blinked, I was justcoming to check on you. Yoruichiwhat are you?
She looked at Renji, I heard he was injured and came to see him myself. Dont forget that he and I are friends
Renji shook his head, Ididnt think you two were all that closeafter all these years.
She smiled, We are friends she glanced back at Byakuya slightly before taking a step forward, I should leave you two alone.
Byakuya reached out, grabbing her by the wrist, Wait
She blinked, Hm? What is it?
Since he is my vice captainhe should know as well.
Renji tilt his head some, Know what?
Byakuya gently pulled Yoruichi back over to him, Shihouin YoruichiIlove you.
She blinked, surprised that he would say it, in front of his vice-captain, no less, Byakuya
YoruichiI love you.
ByakuyaI love you too.
He pulled her in close and softly kissed her lips, And I always will a smile gracing his otherwise stoic expression.
Renji looked back and forth at them, Kuchiki taichouandShihouinYoruichi? he blinked, What the hell kind of match is that?!
Yoruichi stuck her tongue out at him, Jealous, much? she retracted her tongue and grinned, Or is it that you want me all to yourself? she walked over to him, teasingly nuzzling under his chin.
Renji blushed, Well nothat isnt what I want
Oh? Then why are you blushing?
Well thatyou just
Byakuya sat himself up, I will not allow it. He reached for his zanpakutou, I will defeat him once again.
Renji blinked, waving his hands in front of him, N-no! Kuchiki taichou! I never said that I wanted
Chire
Yoruichi laughed, grabbing hold of the blade, Thats enough, Little Byakuya. Besides, you need to recover a bit more before battling like that again. She stretched lightly, Anyway, I need to see what Ichigo and the others are up to. I have to go back with em tomorrow. She walked out of his room.
Renji sighed, then blinked, Waitdid she just say thatbefore battling like that againyou arentgonna fight me like that again, are you?
Byakuya looked out the window, It is possible. If Yoruichi willed it, I would. Andif you ever thought of taking her from me, I would make sure there was none of you left to even think of taking her.
Renji sighed, a sweatdrop on his forehead, You dont have to take it that farI wont go near her.
The following day, Ichigo and the others were waking up, getting ready to go back to the human world.
Yoruichi made her way back into Byakuyas room and smiled down at his sleeping frame. She looked over at the chair, seeing that it had been moved near the door, probably due to Renji having been there after she left yesterday. She grabbed hold of the chair and put it beside the bed and sat down, looking at him, and started to speak, regardless of him being asleep, TodayI have to leave. I have to go backto the human world. Strange, isnt it? How I keep leaving like thisthis time, itll be especially difficult. Because now I know how you really feel. She shook her head, No, maybe I knew all along but didnt want to admit it so that it would be easier for me to leave. She sighed softly, seeing that he was still asleep, I will come back as often as I canand contact you as much as I can. I love you, Byakuya. She softly kissed his lips, pulling out her hairtie and placing it on his stomach, knowing she wouldnt need it as she would probably be in cat form when they traveled back. She walked out of his room, heading back towards the others.
Later in the day, Byakuya awoke. He sat up slowly in bed, his eyes still drooped slightly, not yet fully awake. He looked out, seeing the sunset, smiling lightly. He then looked down into his lap and saw her hairtie. He picked it up, This must be Yoru--- his eyes widened before he could finish his sentence. He had forgotten that she would be leaving today. Last time, he let her go without a word, but he wouldnt let her go without saying goodbye. He pulled the white robe from his body, putting on his shinigami attire, complete with his captains haori, making his way to the gate.
Byakuya arrived. It was still a bit early, other captains having arrived before him. He looked around, his eyes frantically trying to find the ebony womans form. He blinked and looked down, having heard a meow by his feet. YoruichiI almost thought that
Baka Yoruichi began, her otherwise feminine voice masked as she was in her cat form, I wouldnt leave without saying goodbye to you. Thats why I went to your room earlier.
He picked her up in his arms, petting the top of her head and scratching behind her ears, I will miss you, Yoruichi.
Ill miss you too, Little Byakuya. her rough cat tongue licking across his fingers.
He let her down, allowing her to join Ichigo and the others. Ukitake gave and explained the shinigami certificate to Ichigo, everyone standing atop the hill as they all headed back to the human world. Byakuya stood calmly and, for the first time in a long while, wore a soft smile in front of the others.
